Derived from Arabic, alfalfa refers to the meaning ‘ father of all foods’. Alfalfa is called so as it is found to be extremely nutritious and it is known to contain a wide variety of vitamins such as vitamin B, D, E, K, and A. The extracts of the leaves of alfalfa are also known to be good sources of various nutrients like iron, biotin, niacin, folic acid, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and calcium. Alfalfa is extremely beneficial for maintaining the overall health of the body and it can be consumed in various forms such as sprouts, tea as well as powder. Some of the health benefits of alfalfa include:

Treatment of shoulder pain 

Alfalfa is found to be effective in reducing the pain as well as swelling of the shoulders as it promotes blood flow all through the body which helps in decreasing the inflammation. Alfalfa can be consumed in the form of alfalfa tea where dried leaves are boiled or in the form of supplements such as Alvizia one daily multivitamin which helps in relieving pains because of its anti-inflammatory effects. 

Treating heel spurs 

Studies show that intake of alfalfa is very helpful in treating heel spurs. Alfalfa is an excellent source of various minerals like selenium and calcium which are necessary for promoting the formation of healthy bones. This action of alfalfa also limits the progression of atherosclerosis and thus preventing the onset of cardiovascular disease. Alfalfa supplements or alfalfa in the form of either tea or juice has been recommended for obtaining optimal results. 

Treatment of chest pain 

The various actions of alfalfa include the buildup of plaque in the coronary arteries, stimulation of blood flow to the heart as well as reducing the cholesterol levels in the body. Hence alfalfa is extremely beneficial in the treatment of chest pain either in the form of supplements or tea. 

Cleaning colon

The presence of a compound known as saponins in alfalfa imparts it the ability to treat the harmful effects of pathogens, flush out the fungal impurities from the body and also promote the growth of good bacteria as well as eliminate the harmful bacteria. Treating the symptoms of polycystic ovarian disease 

Alfalfa is a rich source of a compound known as coumestrol which is a phytoestrogen containing the ability to act similar to the mechanism of action of estrogen in the body. The imbalance in the levels of estrogen in the body contributes to the formation of ovarian cysts. As alfalfa contains a wide variety of essential nutrients such as vitamin A, D, E, and K along with many necessary minerals, it is beneficial in the treatment of symptoms that can occur as a result of the polycystic ovarian syndrome. Alfalfa has also been found to be beneficial in the treatment of disorders related to women’s health because of its anti-inflammatory as well as anti-cancer effects. 

Treating vitiligo

Alfalfa is extremely effective in the treatment of vitiligo disease as it is a major contributor in increasing the level of the skin pigment known as melanin which helps in getting rid of the white patches that are the characteristic features of vitiligo. Alfalfa has been found to have the maximum effect in treating vitiligo when combined with cucumber. 

Treatment of kidney stones 

The presence of good amounts of vitamins A, E, C along with the essential mineral zinc has been proven to be effective in dissolving kidney stones. Fresh as well as dried alfalfa are useful in relieving the symptoms caused by the presence of kidney stones in the body. 

Reducing the symptoms of menopause 

Because of the presence of various types of phytoestrogens along with adequate amounts of vitamin K, alfalfa has been associated with the reduction of symptoms in menopausal women and also in decreasing the excessive blood flow during menstruation as vitamin K has been found to have blood clotting effects. Alfalfa is also known for its maintenance of the required estrogen levels in the body thereby effectively reducing the symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome. 

Improves the metabolic health

Intake of alfalfa has been found to have potent effects on the reduction of high cholesterol levels in the body as well as in regulating the blood glucose levels as it has a stimulating effect on the release of the hormone insulin from the pancreas. Hence alfalfa is often used as an anti-diabetic agent of choice. 

Prevention of osteoporosis 

One of the vital components of alfalfa is vitamin K which is found to be necessary for the process of formation of bones. Hence intake of vitamin K has been proven to be effective in preventing as well as treating individuals who are prone to develop osteoporosis. Alfalfa has also been found to contain adequate amounts of manganese which is associated with the reduction of inflammation of the bones thereby also contributing to the delay in the onset of osteoporosis. 

Getting rid of bad breath 

Studies have shown that the consumption of alfalfa is associated with decreasing the plaques and bacteria that are present in the oral cavity thereby reducing bad breath. Alfalfa has also been known to contain antibacterial properties that kill the germs that are present in the mouth causing bad breath.
