Nutrition Made Simple

The human brain is no less than a wonder. It is responsible for coordinating movements, expressing emotions and thoughts, for all the involuntary actions, it controls our memory and speech too. So, it is quite important to pay attention to its well-being. Not many people are concerned about the health of their brains unless they see some cognitive changes by the time they’re 50-60 years old. However, there are many ways by which one can ensure a healthy, well-functioning brain before it’s too late.

Ways to keep your brain, healthy

  • Engage yourself in new activities: building new skills surely helps you in keeping your brain healthy by creating new connections between the brain cells, constantly. Challenging the brain is seen to create a backup system. The more stimulation (intellectual) one has, the more circuits in the brain are used, which is associated with good brain health. This is because, the more circuits a human brain has, the lesser are the chances for any neurodegenerative diseases to occur.
  • Show more movements: physical activity is as important as any other exercise for mental well-being. Taking a walk, cycling, swimming, or any other body exercises that keep you fit is beneficial for cognitive health too, research suggests. Some studies suggest that people, who are more physically active, are more likely to respond to problem-solving and have better memory as compared to people who are not physically active. This is because burning calories and engaging in exercising enhances the flow of blood in the brain. Hippocampus is the part of the human brain that is responsible for memory and shrinks as we age. Increased blood flow to the brain may enhance its size, hence suggesting that exercising may enhance brain functioning.
  • Take care of your heart: cardiovascular health can play a major role in determining the functioning of the human brain. High blood pressure or hypertension, high levels of cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), diabetes, and smoking can increase the risks of certain neurodegenerative diseases by obstructing the flow of blood in the brain. Atherosclerosis, a condition in which the walls of blood vessels get hardened and it makes it difficult for the brain to nurture its cells, due to the decreased blood flow. This condition may also lead to stroke, which may cause the brain to be permanently or temporarily damaged. A healthy lifestyle is a key to a healthy heart, proper blood flow, and hence a healthy brain. Studies suggest that people who take a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and have a BMI lower than 25, are less likely to get a stroke as compared to people who don’t follow any of these.
  • Sleep: just like any other part of your body, the brain also requires some rest, every day. Out of all the resting activities, sleeping is the most important and the easiest. When sleeping, our brain eliminates some toxic substances (mainly beta-amyloids) that may lead to neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia. Being consistent about the timings is also important, i.e. going to the bed and waking up at the same time every day. One must also switch off all the digital gadgets before going to bed for better sleep and reducing the risk of neurological diseases. It is also important to indulge yourself in mindful activities like meditation, which may calm your mind. Calming the mind makes it easier to sleep and has proved to be effective against anxiety, depression, confusion, etc.
  • A balanced diet: a diet that consists of proteins, fats, minerals, green leafy vegetables, omega-3 fatty acids, low saturated fats, and whole grains is considered good for your health and also, brain functioning. It may also lower the risks of many neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Let’s have a look at some of the foods that promote a healthy and well-functioning brain:
        • Fatty fish: fatty fishes like salmon, sardines, and trout are some of the rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. The human brain contains 60 percent of fats, most of which are omega-3 fats. The brain uses omega-3s for building nerve cells and functions like learning and memory. These fatty acids are also helpful in slowing down the risks of many neurodegenerative disorders. Lack of omega-3 fatty acids is associated with impaired functioning of the brain, and problems in learning and memory.
        • Turmeric: Turmeric is a spice that is used as a key ingredient in many preparations, and has proved to be beneficial for brain health. Curcumin, the main ingredient found in turmeric can do wonders for brain functioning and health. It acts as a barrier between blood and brain and makes the blood directly enter the brain. Being an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, curcumin benefits memory improves depression, and promotes the growth of new brain cells.
        • Pumpkin seeds: These seeds contain zinc, magnesium, copper, iron, and antioxidants that offer protection to the body from free radicals or oxidative stress. The deficiency of zinc and copper is linked to certain neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and even depression. On the other hand, magnesium is an essential micronutrient when it comes to memory and learning. Low levels of magnesium are linked to migraine, depression, and epilepsy.
        • Dark chocolate/ cocoa: packed with the goodness of flavonoids, caffeine, and antioxidants, dark chocolates, and cocoa powder are considered healthy for the brain. Research suggests that the flavonoid content of dark chocolate enhances memory, and also slows down age-related mental decline.
        • Nuts: consumption of nuts has been shown to improve risks of heart diseases, which in turn enhances brain health by efficiently pumping the blood to the brain. Nuts may also enhance cognition and prevention of neurodegenerative disorders, research suggests. Healthy fats, vitamin E, antioxidants are some of the nutrients found in nuts. A study has suggested that people who consume nuts regularly have a sharper memory than people who do not consume them.
