Multivitamins are one of the most commonly consumed supplements around the globe. Many people claim that they can enhance the overall well-being of a person by reducing the risk of many chronic diseases.

They are supplements that contain various vitamins and minerals. The content or nutritional values depend from brand to brand. Multivitamins are available in the form of tablets, capsules, gummies, powders, and even liquids. It is highly advised to read the labels and follow the instructions when taking multivitamins.

Composition of multivitamins

Some many vitamins and minerals are essential for the overall well-being of humans. Out of these, many minerals and vitamins help in the production of important enzymes and hormones in the body, enhance the functioning of the immune system and keep the nervous system healthy. All the important processes like reproduction, growth, maintenance, regulation of life processes are facilitated by these. Multivitamins comprise many of these ingredients, along with certain herbs, amino acids, fatty acids, etc. However, the amount or quantities of the ingredients vary from brand to brand. Some supplements might contain some ingredients that might react with certain medications, which is why it is important to speak to a doctor before taking them if you’re on any medications.

Benefits of multivitamins

  • Heart diseases: consuming high-quality multivitamins may prevent the development of certain heart diseases, studies suggest. Heart diseases are the leading cause of death around the globe. One such study revealed that taking multivitamins may reduce the risk of death (due to heart disease) in women. However, researchers say that more studies are needed to conclude this benefit of multivitamins, as, results are mixed.
  • Brain health: many research studies have suggested that multivitamins can improve brain health and memory in aged people. They may also uplift the mood of a person. Research has shown that poor nutrition is linked to depression, anxiety, and bad mood. So, multivitamins might help a person with this, by fulfilling the nutritional requirements of the body.
  • Cancer: cancer is one of the leading reasons for death worldwide. Many research studies suggest that taking multivitamins might reduce the risk of certain types of cancer; however, the results are mixed here too. For example, one random study found out that multivitamins may reduce the risk of cancer by up to 31 percent in men; no effect was seen in women. Two studies found out that taking multivitamins was associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer in both men and women.
  • Eyes: cataracts and age-related macular degeneration are the two eye diseases affecting older adults and may even lead to loss of vision if left untreated. Many vitamins (containing antioxidants) and minerals are helpful here, as they slow down the development of such diseases and may even prevent it. Many studies have also linked the consumption of multivitamins with a reduced risk of cataracts.
  • Aging: as we get older, the nutritional needs of the body usually increase and it gets difficult for the body to absorb the nutrients taken in. Also, certain medications may even worsen this condition by depleting the body of many nutrients. Hence, taking multivitamins might promote healthy aging by providing us with all the essential vitamins, minerals, and other ingredients.
  • Immune function: vitamin C, which is one of the main ingredients used in formulating multivitamins, is an excellent antioxidant. It is widely known to enhance the immune function of the body. Vitamins E and D also contribute to the strengthening of immunity, and may also prevent hypersensitivity in some cases.
  • Hair and skin: many vitamins and minerals contribute to the betterment of hair and skin health. Vitamins B7 (biotin), vitamins B3 and vitamin C are necessary for hair health. They promote smooth, dense, and healthy hair whereas, vitamins C, E, and A are known for their skin benefits. So, taking multivitamins provides benefits for skin and hair.
  • Safety and dosage of multivitamins

It is important to consider the dosage requirements of the supplement when consuming it. A high dosage of certain vitamins might affect some people adversely. However, many people can easily tolerate the high amounts of these ingredients. There are two types of vitamins: water-soluble and fat-soluble. The human body flushes out the water-soluble vitamins through urination. Fat-soluble vitamins on the other hand, if taken in excess amounts, may accumulate in the body and cause some problems. Vitamin A toxicity in pregnant women might lead to congenital disabilities and vitamin D toxicity may cause weakness and nausea. However, this toxicity is extremely rare. If a person is consuming nutritious food daily alongside multivitamins, it may lead to excess amounts of vitamins in the body. Hence, it is advised to keep a check on the amounts you’re consuming each day. Multivitamins are good for older adults and people who do not consume animal proteins (vegans and vegetarians), as, they are at a higher risk of vitamin B12 deficiency and omega-3 fatty acids, which are highly important for the body.
