Ashwagandha is a perennial plant and its name is derived from the ‘aroma of a horse’ in Sanskrit because of the odour of sweat which is discharged from its roots. Ashwagandha is a plant which can withstand temperatures in the range of 10 to 40 degrees. Studies show that Ashwagandha plant has many scientific properties such as anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidising effects,sleep-inducing and drug withdrawal capabilities which made it a popular medicinal supplement even a hundred years ago. It is also manufactured as a tonic in boosting the energy levels of the body as well enhances the overall health and well-being. 

The health benefits of Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha also called Withania somnifera is widely used in India as a medicinal preparation in the area of Ayurvedic medicine and also as an ingredient in cooking. The various health advantages which can be derived from the plant include:

  • Immune system

Ashwagandha is very beneficial in boosting the cells in the body which play an important role in the removal of bacteria along with other hazardous substances thereby strengthening the immune system. This plant also promotes the smooth transition of the oxygenated blood throughout the body moulding it combats exhaustion and weakness which are frequently associated with anaemia.

  • Anti-inflammatory

Ashwagandha has been found to have very potent anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown its efficacy in reducing the inflammation which can occur as a result of osteoarthritis and pain which can be associated with any conditions which can cause any kind of handicap in the body.

Ashwagandha plays an important role in decreasing the levels of cortisol in the body which is a fattening compound, thereby assisting in weight reduction.
