Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological and behavior-related condition. The main symptoms of this disorder are that it causes difficulty in concentrating. It also leads to impulsive behavior and the use of excessive energy. Individuals with ADHD symptoms find it challenging to sit still. Studies show that the presence of underlying conditions such as sleep deprivation, circadian rhythm disturbances, and sleep-disordered breathing like mouth breathing may lead to the initiation of ADHD-like symptoms. In ADHD individuals, the long-term complications include serious psychological, educational, and psychiatric effects. To prevent such consequences, it is imperative to diagnose and intervene early in ADHD patients. 

Root Causes of ADHD

Research shows that ADHD has a genetic link. It may also be induced because of various environmental factors, and dietary deficiencies which may increase the risk and cause worsening of the symptoms. Some of the factors that trigger ADHD include Refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, chemical food additives, nutritional deficiencies, preservatives, and the presence of food allergies. 

Symptoms of ADHD

The symptoms of ADHD may be different in different individuals. Their severity may also depend on various environmental, dietary, and other factors. The common symptoms exhibited by Children suffering from ADHD include 

  • Difficulty in concentrating
  • diminished focus
  • Easily distracted
  • Easily bored
  • Difficulty organizing or completing tasks
  • Prone to losing things
  • Doesn’t listen
  • Difficulty in following instructions
  • Fidgety behavior, squirming
  • Extreme difficulty being still and/or quiet
  • Impatience

The symptoms exhibited by Adults may exhibit include 

  • Difficulty focusing and concentrating
  • Overwhelming emotional and physical restlessness
  • Frequent mood swings
  • Prone to anger and a hot temper
  • Disorganized
  • Low tolerance of people, situations, and surroundings
  • Unstable relationships
  • Increased risk for addiction 

Conventional methods of treating ADHD

The most commonly used treatment for ADHD is using drugs like Ritalin and Adderall, both. These medications are known to reduce suicidal thoughts and induce positive personality changes. Since Ritalin is a central nervous system stimulant, it can cause various side effects like nervousness, agitation, anxiety, insomnia, vomiting, tachycardia, hypertension, and even psychosis in some individuals. The side effects of using Adderall which is an amphetamine include tremors, hallucinations, muscle twitches, palpitations, and extreme mood swings. The presence of such side effects is prompting many people to seek out other effective natural remedies for the treatment of ADHD. Some of them are:

  • Fish Oil

    Using Omega-3 fatty acid supplements is beneficial in Individuals suffering from ADHD.  In such patients, the presence of the EPA/DHA in fish oil is effective in regulating optimal brain functioning. Using fish oil Supplementation also helps in reducing the symptoms associated with ADHD and improving learning. Alvizia fish oil supplements are rich in omega 3 fatty acids which have anti-inflammatory properties. 

    • B-Complex 

      Studies show that in Children with ADHD, increasing more amounts of B-vitamins is associated with stimulating the production of serotonin. This is mainly true for especially vitamin B6.

      • Multi-Mineral Supplement (including zinc, magnesium, and calcium)

        It has been recommended that in patients with ADHD,  taking daily supplements of calcium, magnesium, and zinc plays an important role in relaxing the nervous system. It has been found that the presence of the deficiency of these nutrients in ADHD individuals may exacerbate the symptoms.

        • Probiotic 

          In some cases, digestive issues may lead to the occurrence of ADHD. Thus including a good quality probiotic in the treatment regimen is thought to be beneficial in maintaining intestinal health.

          • GABA 

            GABA which is a calming amino acid may cause an improvement in the psychological symptoms associated with ADHD.

            Other ADHD Remedies 

            In both adults and children, Rhodiola Rosea has been proven effective in treating ADHD as it helps in improving the focus. The mechanism of action of this medication is that it works by increasing the sensitivity in the neurological and nervous systems. This in turn stimulates the production of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. These are essential for achieving effective control of symptoms in ADHD patients.

            Essential Oils for treating ADHD

            Studies show that in children with ADHD, using essential oils such as vetiver and cedarwood is effective in improving focus and providing a calming effect. Rosemary and peppermint oils aid in improving memory and concentration. They are also effective in improving alertness. Ylang Ylang and lavender oil provide a calming effect on the nervous system. Using frankincense oil in ADHD patients promoting emotional well-being. These oils are also beneficial in inducing clarity and heightens the cognitive ability of the brain.

            Recommend foods for ADHD patients 

            Additive-free and Unprocessed Foods 

            As food additives contain many toxic chemicals, it is recommended to avoid them and include unprocessed and whole foods in the diet. The presence of artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and food coloring in processed foods may aggravate the symptoms associated with ADHD disorder.

            Foods rich in B-Vitamins 

            Consumption of B complex vitamins is known to help in maintaining a healthy nervous system. Foods such as organic wild animal products and green leafy vegetables are good sources of vitamin B. Including vitamin B6 supplements are needed for the synthesis of essential brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Foods like wild tuna, bananas, wild salmon, grass-fed beef are rich in vitamin B6 and they help in improving ADHD symptoms.

            Wild-Caught Salmon

            The presence of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B6 in salmon makes it vital for providing symptomatic relief in patients with ADHD. Studies show that reduced levels of omega-3 fatty acids in ADHD individuals are associated with learning and behavioral problems.

            Foods to avoid in ADHD patients 

            Sugar is thought to be the major trigger factor for those suffering from ADHD. It is essential to Avoid the consumption of sugar including candy, desserts, soda, or fruit juices.

            Gluten which is a protein found in wheat may be associated with worsening behavior in children with ADHD. In such cases, it is important to Avoid all wheat-based foods such as bread, pasta, and wheat cereal.  They can be replaced with gluten-free and even grain-free alternatives.

            Conventional Dairy products contain a chemical known as casein that can trigger adverse effects in ADHD patients. Goat milk can be used to replace cow milk in such individuals.
