AUTISM AND ITS NATURAL REMEDIES

Autism is also known as an autistic disorder or an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is manifested as a developmental disability. It can lead to social, communication, and behavioral disturbances. Autism in some children presents only with mild symptoms whereas, in others, it can cause severe life-challenging symptoms. The exact cause of autism is not yet determined. Some of the underlying causes may include medications such as valproic acid and thalidomide taken during pregnancy, side effects of toxin exposure, infections, inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, food allergies, and inborn errors of metabolism.

Symptoms of autism include

  • Abnormal Body Posturing or Facial Expressions
  • Abnormal Tone of Voice
  • Avoidance of Eye Contact or Poor Eye Contact
  • Behavioral Disturbances
  • Deficits in Language Comprehension
  • Delay in Learning to Speak
  • Flat or Monotonous Speech
  • Inappropriate Social Interaction
  • Intense Focus on One Topic
  • Lack of Empathy
  • Lack of Understanding Social Cues
  • Learning Disability or Difficulty
  • Not Engaging in Play With Peers
  • Preoccupation With Specific Topics
  • Problems With Two-Way Conversation
  • Repeating Words or Phrases
  • Repetitive Movements
  • Self-Abusive Behaviors
  • Sleep Disturbances

Conventional Treatment

After the diagnosis of autism is confirmed, the method of treating autism recommended for the child depends on his or her individual needs.

There is no specific autism medication known yet. By using a combination of medications, timely help can be provided to people with autism by managing their high energy levels and providing relief to symptoms such as the inability to focus, depression, or seizures. Sometimes the recommended medications can address certain aspects of autism behavior such as autism serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and antipsychotic medicines. Their main aim is to prevent the occurrence of problematic behavior such as self-injury.

The natural treatment options for autism include many supplements and traditional Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine. They include:

Autism Diet

Foods to Eat include unprocessed and additive-free foods.

Bone broth: Bone broth is rich in essential amino acids and minerals which are effective in healing leaky gut and it also improves symptoms of mineral deficiency in the body.

Poultry: consumption of Poultry like organic turkey contains the chemical known as tryptophan which is an amino acid and it helps in producing serotonin which is a calming neurotransmitter. Studies show that people who have disorders of the autism spectrum may have associated decreased “tryptophan metabolism. ” Reduction in the rate of tryptophan metabolism can lead to the impairment of brain development, neuroimmune activity, and mitochondrial functioning.

Foods rich in probiotics

The addition of fermented foods to the diet such as kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi contain probiotics, which are essential in repairing a leaky gut. Studies show that it is necessary to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the body as it has a major impact on the treatment of autism.

Wild-caught fish

A diet high in omega-3s is necessary for maintaining brain health. Omega 3 fatty acids are beneficial for those who are diagnosed with ASD and hyperactivity. A deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids is associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In such individuals, supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids is useful in improving hyperactivity, lethargy, and repetitive behavior in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Natural Supplements for Autism

  • Fish Oil

Supplements of Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, mainly the EPA/DHA that is present in fish oil, are essential for brain function.  It is an anti-inflammatory agent. Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids like Alvizia fish oil supplements helps in increasing the focus. Fish oil is also useful in improving the mood and it boosts memory.

  • Digestive enzymes

Those individuals who are suffering from autism usually have digestive problems such as the leaky gut. Using digestive enzymes in these cases helps increase the absorption of vitamins and minerals. Consumption of digestive enzymes is beneficial in improving digestion. They also reduce inflammation which impairs body immunity. They also help in carrying out various other functions such as detoxification and brain function.

  • Vitamin D3

Vitamin D deficiency is a common occurrence in children with autism. Intake of vitamin D is associated with healthy brain function. The deficiency of vitamin D in pregnant mothers may also increase the risk of developing autism in the offspring.

  • Probiotic

For children suffering from autism,  experiencing gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhea are common. Since individuals with autism are known to have underlying digestive issues, including a good quality probiotic daily in the diet is essential for maintaining proper intestinal health. Probiotics are also necessary for maintaining the optimal balance of good and bad bacteria in the gut.

  • L-carnitine

L carnitine which is an essential amino acid is essential for improving the symptoms associated with autism. Studies show that the intake of l-carnitine supplements is useful in improving behavioral symptoms in those who are diagnosed with autism. Administration of L-carnitine therapy which includes 100 milligrams per kilogram of body weight each day for a total of six months is known to significantly improve the severity of autism.

  • Multivitamins along with folic acid (daily for pregnant women)

Consumption of folic acid in combination with multivitamins during pregnancy is effective in reducing the risk of developing Autism spectrum disorder in the fetus. It is recommended to include prenatal vitamins containing folate in pregnant women.

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine methods such as acupressure and acupuncture are useful approaches in treating symptoms of autism.

  • Essential Oils

Studies show that using essential oils for children with ASD and/or ADHD is beneficial for boosting mood, promoting mental clarity, and reducing stress. These include Frankincense, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Lavender, Mandarin, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Peppermint, Bergamot and Ylang Ylang.

  • Behaviour and Communication Treatments

Behavior and Communication Treatments are autism therapy techniques that help in relieving the behavior and communication difficulties experienced by autistic individuals. These include applied behavior analysis (ABA), verbal behavior intervention (VBI), discrete trial training (DTT), pivotal response training (PRT), and early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI). Other naturally occurring autism treatments include chelation detox and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Using supplements of zinc, liposomal glutathione and l-glutamine are also useful in autism patients.
