DHA or docosahexaenoic acid is a category under omega 3 fatty acid whose main food sources include oily fish like salmon as well as anchovies. Since the body can synthesise a limited quantity of docosahexaenoic acid from the various fatty acids that are consumed as a part of the diet but to ensure that adequate amounts of docosahexaenoic acid should be supplemented from outside. The major role of docosahexaenoic acid in the body is because of its anti-inflammatory activity and reduces the risk of developing various health disorders such as cardiovascular diseases and it also promotes proper brain function along with eye health. Some of the most important health benefits of docosahexaenoic acid are:

Reduces the occurrence of heart disease

Studies include the consumption of docosahexaenoic acid-rich diet has a significant effect in improving the levels of several markers associated with heart health and it is also effective in decreasing the risk of developing sudden death related to cardiovascular disease. The other potent effect of docosahexaenoic acid intake has been found in decreasing the triglycerides levels in the blood and it also promotes the increase of good cholesterol thereby improving the cholesterol profile and thus keeping at bay the onset of heart disease.

Improves the symptoms related to Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

The disorder is known as Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is manifested by the symptoms of impulsive behaviour and also includes difficulty in concentrating. The condition of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) typically starts in childhood and its symptoms are pronounced well into adulthood. Studies show that consumption of a diet containing docosahexaenoic acid that is rich in omega 3 fatty acids in such cases promotes blood flow to the brain thereby stimulating the brain when mental tasks are performed.

Research associated shows that the individuals who are suffering from Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have lower levels of docosahexaenoic acid in their body. Thus supplements of DHA that contain omega 3 fatty acids such as Alvizia triple strength fish oil supplement capsules are beneficial in relieving the symptoms associated with this disease like those of attention and behaviour.

Reduces the risk of preterm delivery

The normal gestation period for the delivery of a healthy fetus is around 34 weeks of pregnancy. Delivering before this duration is termed as preterm births and has the potential risk of developing health disorders in the baby. Studies show that those women who had a history of regular consumption of docosahexaenoic acid have reduced chances of delivering preterm babies.

Fights inflammation

The main mechanism of action of the omega 3 fatty acids that contain docosahexaenoic acid is because of its anti-inflammatory properties. This anti-inflammatory action plays an important role in reducing the risk of developing various health disorders that are associated with advances in an age such as heart and gum disease and it has also been found to be essential in improving several autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis which is characterised by joint pain.

Supports muscle recovery after exercise

Research shows that rigorous physical activity can trigger inflammation in the muscles and thereby causes soreness in them. Thus including regular supplements containing docosahexaenoic acid in the diet helps in reducing the soreness in the muscles after exercise and removes the limitations in the range of motion which are a result of its anti-inflammatory effects.

Helps in relieving eye disorders

Studies have shown that the inclusion of docosahexaenoic acid supplements in the diet have a beneficial effect in improving the symptoms of age-related macular degeneration along with dry eyes and diabetic retinopathy. It has also been known to decrease the discomfort that occurs as a result of prolonged use of contact lenses and it also reduces the risk of developing eye disorders such as glaucoma which gradually causes loss of vision by decreasing the eye pressure.

Helps in slowing the onset of Alzheimer’s disease

It has been established that docosahexaenoic acid is essential for the proper functioning of the brain and its regular intake is associated with decreased risk of declining mental ability which is the characteristic feature of many brain disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Patients who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease have often been found to have lower levels of docosahexaenoic acid. Thus, supplements of DHA are essential in improving the brain function before it interferes with day to day activities. It is also helpful in reducing the onset of depression in such individuals.

Lowers blood pressure

The other main function of docosahexaenoic acid is that it improves blood circulation in the body and also causes the blood vessels to dilate thereby helps in lowering the blood pressure which in turn reduces the risk of developing heart attack and stroke.

Aids in normal brain and eye development in babies

It has been found that docosahexaenoic acid intake is essential for the normal development and functioning of the brain as well as the eyes in babies and hence is necessary for pregnant women and breastfeeding women to include DHA in their diet. It has been found to drastically improve the problem-solving abilities of children on regular consumption.

Supports the reproductive health in men

Studies show that low levels of DHA are usually associated with low-quality sperm in men who are suffering from subfertility of infertility disorders. Adequate supplements of DHA are extremely beneficial in increasing the vitality as well as motility of the sperm which in turns promotes fertility.
