Bradycardia refers to the abnormally slow heart rate below 60 beats per minute. When the heartbeats, blood that is rich in oxygen is pumped throughout the body. When the heart rate becomes low, the body organs may not receive enough oxygen reducing their functionality. Sinus bradycardia occurs when this condition is initiated in the sinus node which is the natural pacemaker of the heart. When the electrical impulses that trigger the heart rate are not occurring as they should, bradycardia occurs. Bradycardia is characterized by the presence of a slower than normal impulse, a failed impulse, an irregular impulse, or an impulse that is blocked.
Signs and Symptoms of bradycardia
When the organs do not receive enough oxygen, the symptoms that may occur are fainting, Dizziness, Lightheadedness, Fatigue, Shortness of breath, Chest pain, Confusion, disorientation, Memory problems and lack of energy. Some underlying health conditions can cause bradycardia.
