Multiple sclerosis refers to the condition characterized by the presence of inflammation of the myelin sheath that is present on the endings of the nerves leading to its damage. In multiple sclerosis, scarring of the neurological tissue of the brain and the spinal cord occurs. This condition happens when the immune system of the body attacks the fatty myelin sheaths whose main function is to insulate the nerve tissue which causes scarring of the nerve tissue as well as the formation of plaques which interrupts the neurological signals that pass through the body. 

Multiple sclerosis mainly affects the white matter of the brain along with the spinal cord where the amount of myelin present is highest. The major occurrence that has been studied in individuals with multiple sclerosis is the breakdown of the blood-brain barrier and T lymphocytes which during normal conditions cannot cross can enter the neurological tissue and trigger various inflammatory reactions causing swelling and loss of the myelin sheath. Some of the conditions whose presence may worsen the condition of multiple sclerosis are:

Blood sugar

In individuals who are suffering from high blood sugar levels, the excess sugar binds to the proteins that are present in the body and form complexes that destroy the functioning of the cell membrane and also causes damage to the insulin receptors which in turn worsen the symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis. When there is low blood sugar, the blood-brain barrier becomes more permeable to sugar which allows the influx of inflammatory substances into the brain cells and causes serious damage. 

Vitamin D

Studies show that individuals who have reduced levels of vitamin D3 in the body are more prone to develop multiple sclerosis. 

Gut Microbiome

Research has found a link between the health of the gut microbiome and neurological health as low levels of healthy lactobacillus and bifidobacterium that are present in the gut are associated with increased sensitivity of the brain as well as the nervous system in general thereby causing neurological inflammation. The major role of the microbiome is that it helps in maintaining a balance in the immune system which increases the risk of developing various autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis. 

Leaky Gut Syndrome 

When there is a disruption in the functioning of the microbiome, the gut lining gets damaged which in turn alters the intestinal permeability leading to the passage of undigested food into the bloodstream and triggers massive inflammatory reactions, and causes autoimmune disorders such as multiple sclerosis. 

Mitochondrial Dysfunction 

One of the major sources of reactive oxygen species in the cells is mitochondria which play a major role in the regulation of neuropathological conditions. Mitochondrial dysfunction triggers the excessive production of reactive oxygen species causing a loss of myelin complex causing conditions such as multiple sclerosis. 

Glutathione Depletion 

In conditions such as multiple sclerosis, the protective shield that is present around the cells which are glutathione gets damaged and worn down causing injury to the mitochondria leading to cell death. The presence of various underlying conditions such as poor control of blood glucose levels along with exposure to environmental toxins causes depletion of glutathione and impairment of mitochondrial function. 

Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis 

Various lifestyle modifications and the inclusion of natural remedies have been found to beat the symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis. Some of them include:

Anti-inflammatory Diet 

The inclusion of anti-inflammatory foods helps in regulating the immune system and also reduces the number of inflammatory reactions in the body. Some of the most effective anti-inflammatory foods include coconut and its products, avocados, olive oil, berries, and vegetables rich in phytonutrients along with fermented foods, herbal teas, apple cider vinegar, and kimchi. A few of the foods that are rich in nutrients that help in mitochondrial support include grass-fed liver and heart along with foods to improve immune coordination such as turmeric, ginger, garlic, onion, rosemary, thyme, cinnamon, and oregano. 

Reducing Stress 

Studies show that a reduction in the stress levels of the body helps in decreasing inflammation and causes an improvement in immune health. Various stress reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises help relieve the symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis. 

Inclusion of magnesium and vitamin B foods

The major role of magnesium in the body is to improve the levels of blood glucose thereby protecting the permeability of the blood-brain barrier. Some of the best sources of magnesium and vitamin B are leafy green vegetables, avocados, grass-fed animal products, raw cacao as well as pumpkin seeds. Vitamin D is also known to increase the production of glutathione in the neuronal cells which protect the cells in the brain from the damage that occurs as a result of oxidative stress. Vitamin D has also been found to be beneficial in regulating the immune system and reduces the inflammation in the nerves of the brain. Supplementing with vitamin D supplements is known to activate enzymes in the brain and cerebrospinal fluid that stimulate nerve growth, synaptic density as well as the synthesis of neurotransmitters.
