Multiple sclerosis refers to the condition characterized by the presence of inflammation of the myelin sheath that is present on the endings of the nerves leading to its damage. In multiple sclerosis, scarring of the neurological tissue of the brain and the spinal cord occurs. This condition happens when the immune system of the body attacks the fatty myelin sheaths whose main function is to insulate the nerve tissue which causes scarring of the nerve tissue as well as the formation of plaques which interrupts the neurological signals that pass through the body.
Multiple sclerosis mainly affects the white matter of the brain along with the spinal cord where the amount of myelin present is highest.
