Cerebrovascular disease refers to a combination of disorders that affect the blood vessels and cause impairment in the blood supply to the brain thereby resulting in various conditions such as stroke, vascular malformation, aneurysm as well as transient ischemic attack. One of the most prevalent causes of neurological disorders that can be life-threatening is cerebrovascular disease and it is also one of the most common causes of death worldwide. Thrombosis, embolism, and arterial blood clot, and atherosclerosis are some of the conditions which may trigger cerebrovascular disease. These conditions may result in blockage or hemorrhage in the blood vessels which hinder the oxygen supply to the brain and cause brain damage. 

The symptoms of cerebrovascular disease vary from individual to individual and on the location of the blockage which commonly includes severe and sudden headaches, confusion, loss of balance, numbness, weakness, disorientation, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, hemiparesis which means weakness in one side of the body, hemiplegia which refers to paralysis on one side, loss of vision, slurred speech and bouts of unconsciousness. Chronic inflammation

The presence of inflammation in the body may lead to damage to the walls of the blood vessels and triggers the onset of cerebrovascular disease. Inflammation also plays a major role in contributing to various conditions such as the build-up of fats and cholesterol which in turn causes narrowing of the arteries which can increase the risk of developing stroke and other associated cerebrovascular diseases. 

Poor diet

One of the major causative factors of cerebrovascular disease includes a poor unbalanced diet along with the lack of physical activity. Consumption of a diet containing inflammatory foods such as refined sugar, processed meat, junk foods may cause inflammation thus leading to cerebrovascular disease. A carbohydrate-rich diet may cause increased levels of insulin in the body which may cause other associated health disorders such as high blood pressure and cerebrovascular disease. Various oils like canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil, and cottonseed oil also trigger inflammation. Smoking and exposure to smokers and the consumption of excessive amounts of alcohol also contribute to the development of the cerebrovascular disease. 

High Blood Pressure 

The presence of high blood pressure is one of the biggest risk factors for triggering stroke and cerebrovascular disease as it causes damage to the blood vessels. 

Sedentary Lifestyle 

Regular physical activity helps in reducing inflammation, lowering stress levels, improves cardiovascular health, stimulates optimal blood circulation, and also regulates blood pressure. Inactivity also leads to an increased risk of obesity which further leads to a wide range of health disorders. A sedentary lifestyle is associated with increased blood pressure, diabetes, inflammation, and high cholesterol levels which are all contributing factors to the development of the cerebrovascular disease. 

Stress and Lack of Sleep 

One of the major effects of stress in the body is increasing blood pressure which in turn stimulates inflammatory reactions in the body and causes obesity, imbalances in the blood sugar levels which may lead to the development of cerebrovascular disease.

Anti-inflammatory diet 

Intake of a balanced and nutritious diet is essential for the prevention of cerebrovascular disease. Removing all inflammatory foods such as refined sugar and carbohydrates, aerated beverages, redefined oils, and processed meat and dairy products and including anti-inflammatory foods like greens, vegetables, fruits with low glycemic index along with herbs and spices help in relieving the symptoms of cerebrovascular disease. Quitting smoking and limiting the consumption of alcohol is also essential for the prevention of cerebrovascular disease. 

Optimizing vitamin D levels 

Studies show that optimal levels of vitamin D3 is essential for the protection as well as preventing the aging of the brain and it is also helpful in boosting memory and cognitive function. This is achieved due to the antioxidant properties of vitamin D3 which stimulate the production of the hormones that are required to carry out various metabolic activities in the body and it also plays an important role in suppressing the hyperactive immune system that can trigger inflammation of the neurological pathway. Optimizing vitamin B levels 

It has been established that adequate amounts of vitamin B12, folate, and other B complex vitamins are essential for maintaining proper circulation as well as cerebrovascular health. Vitamin B levels in the body can be maintained by the consumption of goods such as leafy green vegetables, avocados, lentils, eggs, nuts, and seeds. In individuals who have high levels of homocysteine in the body, supplementing with B12 is beneficial in improving cerebrovascular health.
