CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME AND NATURAL WAYS TO TREAT IT

Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by the presence of extreme fatigue without any underlying causes. Some of the factors that may trigger this condition are viral infections and psychological stress. There has been no proven remedy that has been successful in completely treating chronic fatigue syndrome. However, many natural remedies have a beneficial effect in relieving the symptoms associated with chronic fatigue syndrome. Some of them are:

Intake of essential fatty acids in the diet

The addition of essential fatty acids such as omega 3 fatty acids like linolenic acid and omega 6 fatty acids like linoleic acid is beneficial in reducing fatigue and improving overall health. The mechanism of action of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids is that they stimulate the synthesis of 1 and 3 prostaglandins that are chemicals needed to relieve fatigue in the body. Prostaglandins boost immune functioning, decrease inflammation, reduce the symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome and reduce the intensity of menstrual cramps. Pumpkin seeds and flax seeds are the most important sources of essential fatty acids. Other foods that contain omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids include basil, leeks, bok choy, miso, turnip greens, spinach, collard greens, cod, broccoli, winter squash, shrimp, soybeans, mustard seeds, Brussels sprouts, walnuts, sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, and sesame seeds. 

Increase in protein consumption 

Proteins are vital for optimal growth and maintenance of the body. Intake of adequate amounts of protein is one of the ways to reduce fatigue in this type of disease. The other functions of protein include proper regulation of antibodies, hormones, and enzymes which are necessary for carrying out a large number of metabolic activities. A few animal-based sources of proteins are milk, fish, poultry, eggs, and meat. Protein deficiency is often thought to be associated with tissue abnormalities that can aggravate the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Turkey breast, tuna, salmon, halibut, cheese, lean beef, pork loin, tofu, yogurt, soymilk, peanuts, almonds, spirulina, and parmesan cheese are some of the best sources of protein. 

Maintaining a balanced diet 

A balanced diet that includes protein, grains, vegetables, fruits, and dairy products is found to be effective in reducing the severity of the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Triggers such as cigarettes and other tobacco products, high-calorie foods, refined sugar, deep-fried foods, aspartame, and monosodium glutamate should be avoided. 

Increasing the levels of serotonin 

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is essential for carrying out various processes in the brain like regulating the sleep cycle, perception of pain, and overall well-being. The deficiency of serotonin in the body is found to increase the risk of developing conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome and depression. Dark chocolate, complex carbohydrates containing foods like starchy foods, grains, and beans help in increasing the levels of serotonin in the body. 

Inflammation is the causative factor in chronic fatigue syndrome. This inflammation can be reduced by the addition of anti-inflammatory foods to the diet. Anti-inflammatory foods such as apples, grapes, cranberries, strawberries are rich in flavonoids. Carrots, leafy green vegetables, pumpkin, peppers, and beets are rich in carotenoids. Spinach and tomatoes are rich sources of terpenes. Garlic, chives, leeks, and onions are rich in allyl sulfides. All these foods help in alleviating the inflammation thereby reducing fatigue. 

Vitamin A supplementation 

One of the ways to treat chronic fatigue syndrome is by adding vitamin A to the diet. Vitamin A plays a vital role in protecting the body against the harmful effects of fungi, bacteria, and viruses which may trigger the onset of chronic fatigue syndrome. Vitamin A also helps in stimulating the production of T cells which help in fighting against infections. Vitamin A is necessary for the production of red blood cells which helps in reducing fatigue that may occur as a result of underlying conditions such as anemia. 

Foods that are rich in vitamin B complex 

Vitamin B is needed for the regulation of various metabolic activities such as inactivation of estrogen, metabolism of glucose, and stabilizing brain function. All these metabolic reactions help in maintaining the vitality of the body by regulating energy levels. In conditions that induce stress, depletion of vitamin B occurs in the body which may lead to fatigue and depression. Hence, supplementing the body with Vitamin B is essential for relieving and preventing fatigue. Vitamin A also helps in lowering the symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome-like fatigue, mood swings, food cravings, and retention of fluid. Vitamin B can also be obtained by the consumption of foods like beans, whole grains, cereals, seafood, bananas, leafy green vegetables, peanuts, enriched rice, green peas, and lentils. 

Intake of foods rich in vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential for individuals who are suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome. Vitamin C helps in supporting the immune system and it prevents the onset of fatigue when the body gets invaded by various pathogens. Vitamin C is also essential for the stimulation of interferon which helps in inhibiting the spread of viruses in the body. It is also necessary for the production of white blood cells which help in fighting against infections. Vitamin C is also considered an anti-stress vitamin that contributes to the relief from fatigue. High vitamin C content is found in foods such as cauliflower, cantaloupe, kiwi fruit, oranges, pineapple, strawberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, papaya, and green onions.

Increase bioflavonoids intake

The consumption of grapefruits, oranges, huckleberries, cherries, grape skins and blackberries which are rich in compounds known as bioflavonoids helps in accelerating the process of chronic fatigue syndrome treatment. Bioflavonoids are potent antioxidants that play a major role in safeguarding the cells from the action of free radicals. Bioflavonoids are also effective in reducing the fatigue that occurs as a result of allergic reactions. 

Consumption of vitamin E 

Vitamin E is known to stimulate the immune system. It is also effective in the treatment of allergies as it is a rich source of histamines. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant and it protects the cells from damage by environmental toxins. Spinach, tofu, almonds, shellfish, broccoli, paprika, and hazelnuts are some of the best sources of vitamin E. 

Ginseng

Ginseng has been known to prevent stress, which is a symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome. Ginseng is needed for maintaining vitality and alertness, so it is commonly used for people suffering from mental and physical exhaustion. It is also rich in antioxidants, making it good for boosting immunity against any infections that may cause chronic fatigue syndrome.
