COMMON EYE DISORDERS AND EFFECTIVE WAYS TO IMPROVE EYESIGHT

The common misconception about our eyesight is that we cannot improve our eyesight once it weakens. Studies have shown that effective vision correction can be achieved by diligently following a few home remedies without the application of pharmaceutical intervention. Many eye exercises have been developed to improve the eyesight while simultaneously doing our day to day activities. Including vitamins and foods that contribute to the improvement of eyesight in the diet should also be considered implementing.

Any abnormalities concerning vision should be examined at the earliest. The most commonly occurring refractive errors of vision include nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, presbyopia, blurring of vision, difficulty in seeing at night, impairment of central or side vision. Some of the problems of vision include:

Floaters

Specks, dots, or bubbles that may sometimes be found floating across the vision are called floaters. They are a normal phenomenon most of the time but are a cause of concern when they occur during the day as they represent an indication of retinal detachment.

Conjunctivitis

Also known as pink eye, conjunctivitis is a type of bacterial infection manifesting in the eye which occurs as a result of the infection and inflammation of tissues lining of the eyelids leading to uncontrollable tearing, itching, burning, and irritation of the eyes. When the pink eye occurs due to infection, it can be extremely contagious. Direct application of antibiotics to the eye helps in improving this condition.

Presbyopia

When an individual gradually begins to lose focus on the things that are present within a near distance, the condition is known as presbyopia. Reading the letters or identifying objects that are up close can be a Herculean task in this condition.

Age-related eye disorders

The most commonly occurring age-related eye disorders include macular degeneration, cataract, and glaucoma whose onset can be delayed by maintaining eye health early on.

Blurry vision

Blurry vision can occur in association with several other conditions such as headaches, distortion of vision, dyschromatopsia which is characterized by the appearance of brown and red spots, and diplopia which can lead to permanent ocular damage if left untreated.

Diabetes

Diabetic patients are more prone to develop eye problems than those who are nondiabetic. Elevated blood sugar levels cause damage to the small blood vessels that are embedded into the retina causing diabetic eye disorders and subsequently vision problems. This is a treatable condition with the right medications and proper dietary modifications. Intake of vitamins responsible for improving eyesight also regulates blood sugar levels as they impart anti-inflammatory antioxidants that put a stop to the inflammation of the blood vessels which helps in reverting the eyesight and act as a source of natural vision correction.

Exercises to improve eyesight

A sure-shot technique for strengthening the eye muscles and natural improvement of eyesight is achieved by implementing vision exercises such as focusing on a change which involves strengthening the focus by holding a finger a few feet away from the eyes and focusing on it. The figure of eight exercises aims in causing the eyesight to improve by tracking with the eyes an imaginary figure of eight.

The leading cause of eye strain in today’s generation is a result of spending too much time before a computer. To neutralize these effects, the 20/20 exercise has been devised where we focus for a period of 20 seconds and break away for 20 seconds. Eye rolling is the exercise that aims at strengthening the muscles of the eye, which otherwise do not get used regularly causing its redundancy.

Foods that can improve vision

Implementing a healthy diet regimen is essential to improve vision. Foods that are rich in various antioxidants help in combating inflammation and boost the overall health of the tissues and blood vessels present in the eyes. Another reason for improper eyesight is the inclusion of all the wrong sources of foods that may lead to the build-up of inflammation. Some of the most beneficial foods that contribute to the improvement of eyesight include carrots, kale, spinach, broccoli, sweet potatoes, squash, peaches, plums, blueberries, purple cabbage, oranges, red grapes, bell peppers, egg yolks, nuts, seeds, dark chocolate, and raw cacao powder.

Supplements that contribute to the improvement of eyesight

The most beneficial supplements that have been found in improving the vision include:

Vitamin A - Supplements of vitamin A due to its antioxidant property has been effective in decreasing the risk of developing a genetic disorder of the eye that can cause loss of vision known as retinitis pigmentosa.

Vitamin E - Studies show the efficacy of vitamin E supplements in protecting eyes from damage because of their antioxidant properties. The antioxidants present in vitamin E disable the free radicals that get accumulated in the body tissues causing inflammation. Thus they get rendered harmless and prevent causing vision problems.

Lycopene - Lycopene is predominantly a pigment found in plants responsible for imparting colour to the fruits and vegetables. Studies show that the antioxidant properties of lycopene play a major role in preventing the formation of eye disorders such as cataracts. Lycopene supplement intake also helps in delaying the onset of age-related vision problems like macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and uveitis.

Turmeric - The anti-inflammatory activity of turmeric is extremely beneficial in alleviating eye problems. Curcumin is the most vital ingredient in turmeric. Studies show that eye drops which are obtained by the pharmaceutical combination of turmeric along with other substances are extremely beneficial in the treatment of glaucoma.

Resveratrol - Research has proved time and again the antioxidant effects of resveratrol as it acts as protection against developing eye disorders. Resveratrol has also been found to be effective in delaying the onset of age-related ocular disorders. Alvizia evening primrose oil supplements are highly beneficial in improving eyesight.

Avoiding inflammatory foods

A combination of eye disorders that causes the tissues of the eyes to swell is termed as uveitis. In such conditions, the avoidance of inflammatory foods that can trigger the inflammatory response of the immune system plays an essential role in preventing further optical damage. Some of the most commonly ingested inflammatory foods include processed grains, junk foods, highly refined sugar, and hydrogenated oils.
