Dandruff often manifests itself in the form of an itchy scalp and flakiness. In some individuals, it may also present with other symptoms like greasy patches on the scalp and tingling skin.

Some of the causes of dandruff include dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, sensitivity to the use of artificial hair products, and the growth of a specific type of fungus that lives on the scalp. 

A few of the natural home remedies to get rid of dandruff are:

  • Tea Tree Oil

    Traditionally, tea tree oil has been used to treat various ailments ranging from acne to psoriasis.

When it is applied to the skin, aloe vera helps treat a wide variety of skin conditions like burns, psoriasis, and cold sores. Aloe Vera is also beneficial in the treatment of dandruff because of its potent antibacterial and antifungal properties. Studies show that using aloe vera is effective against various species of fungi. This makes it useful in controlling fungal infections that cause hair loss from the scalp. aloe vera helps reduce the inflammation in the body which in turn reduces the occurrence of dandruff.

The presence of adequate amounts of acidity in the vinegar helps stimulate the shedding of dead skin cells on the scalp. Apple cider vinegar is effective in balancing the pH of the skin. This helps it to reduce the growth of fungus and to effectively fight dandruff.

            • Aspirin

              Salicylic acid is one of the major components present in aspirin. This compound imparts anti-inflammatory properties to aspirin. Salicylic acid is also an important ingredient in many anti-dandruff shampoos. The mechanism of action of Salicylic acid is that it works by getting rid of scaly skin. It is also effective in loosening flakes so that they can be removed easily from the scalp. Anti-dandruff shampoos usually contain piroctone olamine in combination with salicylic acid or zinc pyrithione. shampoos that contain salicylic acid are also effective in treating seborrhoeic dermatitis. 

              • Increasing the Intake of Omega-3s fatty acids 

                Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for maintaining the overall health of the body. Omega 3 fatty acids are important constituents of the cell membranes that surround your cells. They are also essential for the normal functioning of various body organs such as the heart, immune system, and lungs. Omega-3 fatty acids are also beneficial for maintaining skin health. They help manage oil production and hydration in the skin. Omega 3 fatty acids promote wound healing and help in the prevention of premature aging. Deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids in the body manifests in the form of dry hair, dry skin, and dandruff. 

                Omega-3 fatty acids are effective anti-inflammatory agents which may help in relieving irritation and dandruff symptoms. Some of the sources of omega 3 fatty acids include fatty fish like salmon, trout and mackerel, flaxseeds, Chia seeds, and walnuts. Taking Alvizia fish oil and flaxseed supplements also increases the content of omega 3 fatty acids in the body.

                  Probiotics are a type of useful bacteria that are good for your health. They are mainly present in the gut lining. Probiotics are naturally found in fermented foods such as kombucha, kimchi, tempeh, sauerkraut and natto. Probiotics can also be taken in the form of supplements.
