Nutrition Made Simple

In this article, you will learn more about the skin enhancing properties of evening primrose oil and ways to use it.

Evening primrose oil is highly beneficial for getting rid of hyperpigmentation, acne scars, dark spots and dull skin. This oil is best known for its hormone- balancing properties. Being a yellow oil extracted from the seeds of evening primrose flowers, it has a heavy consistency and strong scent. What makes it unique and special is its rich essential fatty acid content that’s present in it. Evening primrose oil is highly concentrated in gamma linoleic acid or

GLA, which is an omega-6 fatty acid. This nutrient is crucial for keeping your skin moisturised, clear bright and healthy. Although, there is lack of data confirming, that evening primrose oil helps with skin lightening there are many reports from people saying that it visibly lightens hyperpigmentation and heals hormonal acne. It also supports in lessening dark spots and inflammation as well, which leaves one’s skin looking clearer and brighter, and  hence lighter!

So, how can one use evening primrose oil for skin lightening?

You can use evening primrose oil, both internally and externally. However, please ensure to first consult a doctor before taking evening primrose oil capsules, or applying it on your skin. To take it internally one can consume 500 milligrams 2 times a day. And for external use you can pierce an evening primrose oil capsule, squeeze the oil onto the clean fingers, and apply it onto the face and neck.

But for more effective skin lightening try the following recipe.

Since evening primrose oil is thick and heavy oil, you can combine it with argan oil, which is also good skincare oil for lightening and brightening.

Here's the recipe:

What you need
  • Two tablespoons evening primrose oil
  • Two tablespoons argan oil,
  • Eight drops lemon essential oil,
  • Eight drops lavender essential oil,
  • Five drops carrot seed essential oil,
  • Small funnel,
  • Two ounces amber glass dropper bottle.

Using a small funnel transfer two tablespoons each of evening primrose oil and argan oil into a 2 ounces amber glass dropper bottle. Next, carefully add 8 drops of lemon essential 5 drops of carrot seed essential and 8 drops of lavender essential oil. Screw on a cap tightly and roll the bottle between your palms to gently combine the oils together. Remember to not shake the bottle to mix the oils because this will create air bubbles, that can make your oil go rancid faster. Remember evening primrose oil has a short shelf life of six months! Store your blend in a cool, dry place.

Instructions for use:

Place 3-4 drops of evening primrose on your palm, rub both palms together and gently massage onto clean skin. Use twice a day, after washing your face.
