Garcinia Cambogia also known as Malabar tamarind, pot tamarind, brindleberry or kudampuli is an exotic fruit is extensively used in the food industry and it is extremely beneficial in the treatment of a large number of disorders such as the accumulation of fluid the body called oedema, constipation, piles, rheumatism, disorders caused by intestinal parasites, irregular menstruation, and high lipid levels. The various parts of the garcinia cambogia plant are used in different ways as they contain a variety of health-promoting compounds. Such a combination makes it highly invaluable for the treatment of many ailments. Recent studies have focused on the role of garcinia cambogia in effective weight loss regimen. Commercial products made from the components of garcinia cambogia such as Alvizia pure Garcinia Cambogia extract HCA soft gel capsules are available in the market which has received a lot of positive feedback especially because of its ability to promote weight loss.

Garcinia cambogia is a plant whose fruits are utilised as a flavouring agent, food preservation and a food bulking agent. It is also known as an anti obesity supplement. It acts as a thickening agent when added to various curries, chutneys and soups. The fruits of garcinia cambogia are mostly 5 centimetres in diameter and consist of 6 to 8 grooves and the unripe fruit is green in colour which on ripening turns into yellow or orange in colour. This fruit has an appearance strikingly similar to a small pumpkin and it has a slightly sweet sour taste. 

Garcinia cambogia extract is derived from its rind, fruit or roots. The addition of a solvent is used to release the active components ingrained in garcinia cambogia and the extracts are generally made with the use of either glycerin or ethanol. The active compound which is extracted from garcinia cambogia is hydroxycitric acid which constitutes about 30% of the fruit and it is marked commercially in the form of supplements.

The extracts from the fruits, seeds, roots and leaves of garcinia cambogia possess large medicinal value as they contain hydroxycitric acid and other compounds which are beneficial in conditions like abdominal pain, abdominal infections and liver disorders. Ayurvedic science believes that garcinia cambogia stimulates the digestive juices and therefore aids in digestion. Some of the other health enhancing components of garcinia cambogia are xanthones, xanthone derivatives and polyisoprenylated benzophenones. 

About 30% of these compounds are present in the flesh of garcinia cambogia fruit which play an important role in weight loss, regulating fatty acid synthesis and suppressing the appetite. The presence of polyisoprenylated benzophenones in garcinia cambogia enables it to act as an anti HIV and anti bacterial agent also inhibiting the harmful action of toxins thereby protecting the cells from damage.

Extracts from the fruits and leaves of garcinia cambogia have been found to have antibacterial and anthelmintic properties and they are implemented in the treatment of various bacterial infections by expelling parasites out of the body by inhibiting their mobility thereby reducing their action. These extracts from garcinia cambogia also exhibit antibacterial activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus etc by killing the cells infected by bacteria thereby reducing the overall infection. The presence of all these biologically active components in garcinia cambogia inhibits the growth of bacteria thus thwarting off infections.

Anti ulcer properties:

Garcinia cambogia has been found to sooth the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract thereby it is very effective in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders by reducing the inflammation. Studies show that oral intake of garcinia cambogia fruit extract continuously for a period of 15 days protects the inner lining of the stomach from the damage occurring as a result of the drug indomethacin. It also causes a decrease in acidity and volume of the digestive fluid, gastric acid thus decreasing the resulting symptoms of inflammation. 

Due to gastric ulcer, there is a large increase in the levels of oxidative stress, free radical damage and inflammation in the body which needs to be brought under control which is achieved by garcinia cambogia extract as it reduces the levels of oxidative stress and also decreases the markers of inflammation. It also causes the cessation of the progression of the gastric lesion, improves gastric blood flow providing more nutrients and oxygen thereby nourishing the gastric area. This extract also reduces the adhesion of damaging substances to the gastric area, increases the pH of the gastric juice and promotes the healing of gastric ulcer.

Anti inflammatory properties:

Due to its gastric protective effects, the extracts of garcinia cambogia are often used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It reduces the gastrointestinal damage, increases the levels of antioxidants thereby protecting against inflammation. 

Diuretic properties:

In conditions where water gets accumulation Ed in the body called edema, a class of drugs known as diuretics are administered to the individuals to increase the urine output which reduces the accumulated extra amount of water and electrolytes in the body. The leaf extract from garcinia cambogia which contains compounds like flavonoids and glycosides induces a diuretic effect and increases the volume of urine output as well as the excretion of electrolytes like sodium, potassium and chloride and thereby used for the treatment of edema. 

Garcinia cambogia for weight loss treatment:

Garcinia cambogia has been widely recognised for its anti obesity actions mainly due to the presence of hydroxycitric acid which inhibits the process of lipogenesis where carbohydrates are converted into fat which then oxidises carbohydrates and promotes glycogen storage. This in turn reduces the appetite thereby decreasing the weight gain in the body. Hydroxycitric acid promotes the production of serotonin in the brain which is a natural appetite suppressant and further causes a decrease in the hunger cravings and thus helps in the process of weight loss. 

Type 2 diabetes mellitus:

Garcinia cambogia acts by reducing the insulin resistance and thus promotes the peripheral insulin sensitivity thereby increasing the transport of glucose to the cells and causing a reduction in the concentration of glucose in the blood. It reduces hyperglycemia, improves the glucose metabolism and improves the utilisation of glucose as a source of energy by the body.
