Glutathione is a substance that is produced by the liver, in a natural way. It is basically an antioxidant produced in the cells of our body, and comprises largely of the amino acids glycine, cysteine and glutamine. Deficiency of this substance can happen as a result of poor nutrition, environmental toxins, stress or ageing. Glutathione is taken orally by many people for the treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, prevention of ageing, alcoholism, asthma, heart
disease, hepatitis, liver diseases, diseases that are associated with weakening of the immune system. It is also inhaled when treating lung diseases like cystic fibrosis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease in HIV patients. It is also
taken by the IV (intravenous) route for the prevention of poisonous side effects of chemotherapy and treatment of infertility in males.
Glutathione is engaged in many processes that happen in the body, like the building of tissues and its repair, making chemicals and proteins that are required by the body and functioning of the immune system.

How can we improve the levels of glutathione in our body?

Glutathione contains molecules of sulfur, which is why sulfurrich foods like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, garlic, onions, nuts, eggs, legumes, lean protein like fish, chicken help in boosting up its natural production in the body.

There are some other foods/ supplements that help in boosting up the levels of glutathione

Milk thistle: Milk thistle has been used in traditional m edicines for ages, because of its many uses and benefits. It has been used to treat liver and gallbladder diseases, and promotes the production of breast milk for infants.

About alvizia’s milk thistle supplement

Alvizia’s milk thistle supplement is a total liver detox formula, for people with liver diseases. Available in a pack of 60 soft gelatin capsules, it also acts as an antioxidant by reducing the production of free radicals in the human body.
This supplement contains 70 percent silymarin, which makes it ideal for usage. It is beneficial in improving brain functions, promotes healthy and beautiful skin, boosts up the immune system and levels of glutathione and reduces
bone loss and cholesterol.

Flaxseed: Flaxseeds are called one of the most powerful super foods on the planet Earth. It enhances the levels of glutathione, prevents the risks of heart diseases, stroke and diabetes.

Guso seaweed and whey: These two are also considered very well for the functioning of the immune system and enhancing the levels of glutathione.

Benefits of glutathione

Prevents oxidative stress: oxidative stress happens as a result of an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the body’s ability to fight against them. High levels of oxidative stress can also serve as a precursor to
many diseases like diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. Glutathione, helps in preventing this condition, which is why it is believed to reduce the chances of these diseases.
Improves insulin resistance in aged individuals: while ageing, people tend to produce less amount of glutathione.Research has shown that glutathione may help with weight management and insulin resistance in older individuals.
Studies also found out that low levels of glutathione are linked to less fat burning and higher rate of fat storage in the body.
May reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s disease: this disease affects the central nervous system and causes tremors. One study had suggested that taking glutathione through IV (intravenous) route may have positive effects on symptoms  of Parkinson’s disease, such as tremors and rigidity. However, healthcare professionals have specified that they need more research about this benefit of glutathione.
Fights against autoimmune diseases: chronic inflammation can happen as a result of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac disease and can also increase oxidative stress. Glutathione helps in reducing
oxidative stress by stimulating or reducing the body’s immune response. Autoimmune diseases attack the mitochondria in some specific cells of the human body, which glutathione protects by eliminating free radicals.
Prevents the impact of uncontrolled diabetes: long term high blood sugar is linked to reduced amounts of glutathione in the human body, which may lead to oxidative stress and damage to the tissues. A research study showed that
dietary supplements that contained cysteine and glycine can improve levels of glutathione, lowered oxidative stress or damage in people who have uncontrolled diabetes, despite high blood sugar levels.
Reduces symptoms of respiratory diseases: Nacetylcysteine (a byproduct of glutathione) is a medication that is used in the treatment of asthma and cystic fibrosis. It helps to make mucus thin and reduce inflammation when inhaled.
Glutathione is found in many foods naturally, cooking or pasteurizing can however diminish its levels. The highest concentrations of this substance are found in freshly picked fruits and vegetables, unpasteurized dairy products, raw
meat.
Reduces oxidative damage in autistic children: children with autism have higher levels of damage caused by oxidative stress, often associated with low levels of glutathione in the brain.
