HORNY GOAT WEED IN ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

HORNY GOAT WEED IN ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?

So erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to get or and to maintain an erection to have sexual intercourse. However, if you have experienced such a thing sometimes that does not mean you have an ED. If you have faced it regularly, then only you can say it ED.

There is no specific age when men get an ED. You can have it at any age. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases abbreviated as NIDDK, 12% of men younger than 60, 22% of men with age between 60 to 69 and 30% of men over 70 have ED in the United States.

How do erections happen?

So when you are sexually excited, nitric oxide signals the release of a compound called cGMP. cGMP stands for cyclic guanosine monophosphate. What this cGMP does is that it causes relaxation of smooth muscles that results in an inflow of blood into three tubules like cylinders in the penis. And this leads to an erection.

Now what happens in erectile dysfunction is that an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 or In short PDE5 5 interferes with this nitric oxide and cGMP. Hence blood can't move through the arteries resulting in no erection.

What is Horny goat weed?

Horny goat weed has an active ingredient icariin. Icariin is reported to benefit men with ED. It is sold over the counter as a tablet, capsule, powder and tea. Other than ED, horny goat weed is used in several other problems. Some of them have been listed below:

  • low libido in men and women
  • atherosclerosis meaning hardening of arteries
  • osteoporosis
  • fatigue
  • hay fever
  • brain injury
  • hypertension meaning high blood pressure

Have you ever wondered why such a name as horny goat weed? Well, it is believed that it is named so because a goat herder noticed his flock became sexually stimulated after they ate the plant. Horny goat weed has its botanical name as Epimedium. It is known by its other names as yin yang Huo, barrenwort, randy beef grass, rowdy lamb herb and brain tonic of the immortals. Epimedium is the native plant of China, Japan and Korea. Further, it is grown as an ornamental plant in many places.

How does Horny goat weed treat ED?

The active compound called Icariin inhibits the activity of PDE5. This means PDE5 will no longer block the dilation of arteries in the penis. As a result, blood gets filled in the arteries and erection is created. You might have heard of sildenafil(Viagra). It is a prescribed medicine and it also works similarly.

Now the question is does Horny Goat Weed work?

Just like many other supplements, the claims about the effectiveness of horny goat weed remain wide. Also, human research is limited.

A study was done to investigate the effects of horny goat weed on rats. It was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. It was found that rats who were given the extract of horny goat weed showed better erectile functions.

Another study reported that icariin effectively inhibits human PDE5. Also, it said that Sildenafil that is Viagra is 80 times more potent than icariin.

Are there any side effects of horny goat weed?

Well, it is being said that if horny goat weed is taken over a few months then, minor side effects are only experienced. There might be dizziness, rapid heartbeat or nosebleeds. However, if larger amounts are taken at once, then it can cause breathing issues.
