One of the common conditions that occur with age is under-eye puffiness, also known as bags under the eyes, puffy eyes, or dark circles under the eyes. When skin tissues around the eyes and eyelids weaken and sag, it causes the accumulation of fluid beneath the eyes. This leads to puffiness under the eyes and a swollen appearance. Some of the triggers of this condition include seasonal allergies, eczema, water retention, improper sleeping posture, smoking, drugs, and alcohol.

Symptoms and Causes of Bags Under the Eyes

The symptoms generally associated with bags under the eyes include mild swelling, saggy or loose skin, and dark circles. They are usually harmless and do not require any significant medical intervention. In individuals who experience severe and persistent bags accompanied by redness, itching, or pain, various treatment modifications can be applied to get rid of this condition. With advancing age, the tissue structures and muscles supporting the eyelids become weak as a result of the loss of collagen which in turn causes sagging of the skin. The fat that is normally found in the area around the eyes gets accumulated below the eyes, along with a collection of fluid. It makes the area under-eye appear puffy and swollen. Some of the common causes include fluid retention as a result of changes in the weather, imbalance in the hormone levels, excessive intake of salty foods, lack of proper sleep, allergies, dermatitis where the puffiness is accompanied by redness, and itching and heredity.

By incorporating certain lifestyle and dietary modifications, one can get rid of those bags under the eyes for good. There are numerous natural remedies which include eliminating some bad habits and using at-home remedies that can help in reducing the appearance of bags under the eyes.

  • Taking Care of underlying Allergies

When various allergies flare up due to various reasons such as seasonal variations, the occurrence of watery and puffy eyes is inevitable. Using natural remedies, such as essential oils for allergies, helps in managing the severity of symptoms associated with them.

  • Reducing the salt content in Excessive

Salt intake most commonly links to elevated blood pressure. Also, increased levels of sodium in the body can cause fluid retention and lead to puffiness under the eyes. Avoiding salty foods, like pizza and soups and including fresh vegetables, in particular, celery, help in curbing the desire for salt and reduce the chance of developing bags under the eyes.

  • Exercising Those Bags Away

Exercise is one of the natural methods which are effective in reducing the signs of ageing. Regular physical activity also provides a youthful glow to the skin. The area around the eyes can derive benefit from special facial exercises. Studies show that yoga for the face involves slow exercises of the facial muscles to help tone and tighten them. This method removes the excess fluid and helps in providing relief from swelling under the eyes.

  • Trying a Neti Pot

A neti pot is an ancient remedy that can help combat puffy eyes. A neti pot is effective in flushing out all the extra moisture in the sinuses that get collected as a result of seasonal allergies, colds, or infections.

  • Limiting Alcohol consumption

The major side effects of excessive alcohol intake are that it dehydrates the body and skin. This can in turn cause the delicate area around the eyes to appear sunken and dark leading to the appearance of bloodshot and tired eyes. Replacing alcohol content with water helps the eyes to be wide open and the skin around the eyes will glow as it gets the required amount of hydration.

  • Stopping cigarette smoking

Smoking cigarettes causes premature drying and skin aging around the eyes. The chemical ingredients in cigarettes are toxic as they can trigger irritation around the eyes. This can in turn result in dark circles under eye bags along with a wrinkled and droopy appearance.

  • Try a Cold Compress

In individuals suffering from swollen and puffy eyes, trying a cold compress is often beneficial. chilled spoons on top of your eyes, slices of cucumbers, or even chilled, dampened tea bags with a drop of lavender essential oil can be used for this purpose.

  • Avoiding overexposure to the sun

Excessive exposure to the sun can make the skin around the eyes sag, leading to the formation of wrinkles. It also causes dehydration of the skin. Using a good sunscreen, a good pair of UV-protected sunglasses and a hat helps in protecting the face from harmful rays, thereby keeping the skin around the eyes from darkening due to the effects of the sun.

  • Using an All-Natural Eye Cream

With advancing age comes the dehydration of the skin due to a lack of collagen. Hence, adequate moisturizing is essential.

  • Increasing Collagen in the Diet

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body found mainly in the muscles, bones, skin, and tendons. Its main function is to provide strength and elasticity to the skin. As collagen production naturally begins to slow down with age, it is responsible for the formation of undereye bags. Increasing the levels of collagen in the body helps in making the skin look firmer. It is also effective in increasing the smoothness of the skin. Using collagen supplements leads to the renewal of skin cells and hastens the process of repair. Increased intake of vitamin C helps in absorbing higher amounts of hyaluronic acid which decreases with age. Alvizia’s hair, skin, and nail supplements are rich in both collagen and vitamin C.

  • Eating iron-rich foods

Iron deficiency anemia is a condition where the blood is lacking an adequate number of red blood cells. These cells are responsible for transporting oxygen to tissues in the body. Reduced levels of Iron can manifest in the form of dark circles under the eyes. Intake of foods such as red meat, pork, seafood, beans, leafy green vegetables, and apricots along with the consumption of iron supplements increases the iron content in the body.
