Joints are the structures in the body that connect two bones and allow easy movements. Shoulders, hips, elbows, knees are some examples of joints. So, it is very important to keep them healthy to allow the body to move with ease and flexibility. Types of joints in the human body are:

  • Immovable joints: these joints are fixed and fibrous and can be defined as two or more bones that are in close contact and do not allow movement. An example of this type of joint includes the human skull.
  • Slightly movable joints: these are also known as cartilaginous joints and only allow limited movement. Examples include the vertebrae of the spine.
  • Freely movable joints: also called synovial joints, allow all the parts of the joint to move freely and smoothly against each other. Examples of freely movable joints include the knee and the shoulders. There are many types of freely movable joints, including:
  1. Ball and socket joints: this type of joint consists of one rounded head of one bone sitting in the cup of another bone. An example is the hip joint.
  2. Pivot joint: this type of joint can be characterized by one bone that can swivel in a ring that is formed by another bone.
  3. Condyloid joint: this type of joint allows movement without any rotations, for example, finger joints and jaw.
  4. Hinge joint: this joint is just like a door that just opens and closes in one particular direction. An example of a hinge joint is the knee joint.
  5. Gliding joint: also known as plane joint, it allows limited movement and has smooth surfaces that can slip over each other, example includes the wrist joint.
  6. Saddle joint: this type of joint just allows some movement back and forth, with no rotation. An example of a saddle joint is the base of the thumb.

Conditions that affect the joints

  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune, chronic, and inflammatory disease and affects the joints throughout the body. The pain in the joints usually happens on both sides of the body in rheumatoid arthritis. For example, if a joint in the left leg is affected by rheumatoid arthritis, then, the same joint in the right leg will get affected too.
  • Osteoarthritis: A degenerative disease, osteoarthritis is the most commonly found type of arthritis which affects many people around the globe. In this disease, the cartilage that protects the ends of the bones wears down, over time. It mostly affects the joints in the hands, hips, knees, and spinal cord. The symptoms of osteoarthritis are usually manageable, but, the damaged joints cannot be reversed.
  • Fractures: Older adults are considered vulnerable to hip injuries due to falling, which happens as a result of problems in balancing the body. Sometimes, these fractures might affect the joints and cause pain in the long run.
  • Some other conditions: bursitis (inflammation of a fluid-filled sac-like structure that cushions the joint), injuries that force the ends of the bones to dislocate (dislocations), gout, lupus, overusing a particular joint, chondromalacia (the breakdown of cartilages in the kneecap), infectious diseases like influenza, hepatitis and mumps, rickets, injuries, tendinitis (inflammation in the tendons), fibromyalgia, sarcoidosis are some conditions that can have some negative effects on the joints, depending upon the severity of the particular condition.

Symptoms and diagnosis of joint pain 

It is important to see a doctor if someone experiences joint pain and does not have the knowledge about its underlying or the main cause. It is advised to consult a doctor if experiencing the following:

  • Swollen, red, tender, and warm areas around the joints.
  • Pain in the joints for more than 2-3 days.
  • Fever along with joint pain without any symptoms of flu.

The doctors usually perform a physical examination along with some inquiry about the medical history, this helps in narrowing down the potential causes of joint pain. In some cases, an X-ray is required to identify joint damage which is associated with arthritis. If there is a possibility of something more severe, a blood test helps the doctor to diagnose autoimmune disorders, if any.

How to keep your joints healthy?

  • Keep moving your body: the first and foremost activity which is a requirement for keeping the joints healthy is to stay active and keep moving the body. It prevents joints from getting stiff. When sitting for too long in one particular position, it is advised to keep on changing postures and stretch or walk a bit.
  • Weight management: People who are overweight are at a greater risk of getting joint pain. If one experiences any kind of strain on the joints, it is advised to shed some pounds, as, with every lost pound, one can reduce up to 4 pounds of pressure on the knees.
  • Low-impact exercises: exercises that lie under the low impact category, like walking, swimming, strength training are considered good for enhancing joint health. They do not put a strain on the knees and provide various health benefits.
