Dengue fever is a viral infection that occurs due to transmission through mosquitoes. Dengue fever is also known as dandy fever and breakbone fever. The main cause of Dengue fever is the viral infections that are spread by mosquitoes that belong to the Aedes family, most commonly the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The dengue virus enters the mosquito when it bites an infected individual. When This infected mosquito bites another person, it then transfers the virus to that person. This cycle keeps continuing. The dengue-causing viruses are of four types. When infection occurs due to any one of these viruses, the body develops immunity against that particular mosquito. In such cases, the chance of getting infected by the other three types of remaining dengue viruses increases. It also precipitates the risk of developing dengue hemorrhagic fever.

The Symptoms Of Dengue Fever

The symptoms that are manifested at the onset of dengue fever are High body temperature (Fever), Headaches, Vomiting, Nausea, pain behind the eyes, Rash, and Swollen glands. 

In some individuals, Dengue can also present in the form of more severe symptoms like Severe stomach pain, Bleeding gums or nose, blood in the stool or urine, Difficulty in breathing, Skin bruising occurs due to bleeding under the skin, the presence of cold and clammy skin, Fatigue and irritation. It is necessary to treat these initial symptoms at the earliest to avoid life-threatening complications like hemorrhagic fever.

Home Remedies For Treating Dengue Fever

  • Papaya Leaf Juice

The extract from papaya leaves is effective in treating dengue fever. Since Papaya leaves are rich sources of vitamin C and antioxidants, they help in boosting the body‘s immunity. One of the major complications of Dengue fever is a low platelet count. In such conditions, papaya leaves are effective in improving the blood platelet count.

  • Goat milk

Dengue fever is found to be associated with the deficiency of selenium deficiency. Goat’s milk is a proven remedy that helps in curing dengue because of the presence of good amounts of selenium in it. Using goat milk in dengue patients is known to increase the blood platelet count thereby preventing various complications.  

  • Giloy juice

Giloy is a plant abundantly found in the tropical regions of India. The giloy plant is a natural antioxidant. This property helps it to boost the immune response. It also protects the body from the extensive damage caused by free radicals. Giloy is also an effective antipyretic. Thus the juice extracted from the giloy plant can be used reducing in providing relief from chronic fever in dengue fever. The other major activity of this plant juice is that it increases the blood platelet count. Because of all these properties, it is considered to be one of the most preferred natural remedies for the treatment of dengue fever.

  • Guava juice 

Guavas contain abundant amounts of vitamins and minerals in addition to a compound known as tannins. Guava is also rich in vitamin C which can help in boosting the functioning of the immune system naturally. Consumption of guava juice is also beneficial in increasing the blood platelet count and is hence a great option to treat dengue fever.

  • Jaggery and onion

Onions have potent antipyretic properties which help in reducing the temperature in dengue patients. When used along with jaggery, onion increases the blood platelet count thus helping it to effectively cure dengue fever.

  • Apple juice 

Consumption of apple juice helps increase the blood cell number. This property enables it to increase the blood platelet count. Since apples are natural antioxidants, they can be beneficial in preventing the blood cells from damage caused by the free radicals.

  • Neem leaves

Neem leaves have potent healing properties. Thus they are used in the treatment of dengue fever. The main mechanism of action of Neem leaves in dengue is that they increase the number of blood platelets along with white blood cells. Because of this activity, neem leaves are an essential natural remedy for dengue fever as both these blood cells decrease drastically causing life-threatening complications. 

  • Kiwi fruit 

Kiwis are rich in various essential nutrients and minerals. These are effective in reducing the debilitating symptoms of dengue fever like fatigue and weakness. Kiwi fruit also contains good amounts of vitamin C which enables to increase the body‘s immunity. 

  • Vitamin K

Bleeding is one of the complications of Dengue hemorrhagic fever. Using vitamin K in such cases is known to stop excessive bleeding. Consumption of vitamin K-rich foods like green leafy vegetables, fish, meat, eggs, and cereals are effective in curing dengue fever. Alvizia one daily multivitamin supplements also contain vitamin K. 

  • Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seeds contain good amounts of both vitamin C and vitamin K along with fibre. The presence of the vitamins in fenugreek seeds helps in improving the body’s immunity and prevents the onset of bleeding. As fenugreek seeds have antipyretic properties, they also bring down the body temperature in dengue. 

  • Turmeric 

Turmeric contains a compound known as Curcumin whose immunomodulatory functions help in boosting the body’s immunity. The antiviral properties of turmeric help in combating the root cause of dengue which is the viral infection.

  • Tulsi and black pepper

Tulsi which is also known as the basil plant has many medicinal properties. Tulsi is a potent antioxidant property that enables the improvement of the immune response. Tulsi also protects the body from free radical damage. Since tulsi has antimicrobial properties, it can be used in eliminating the dengue virus. 

  • Barley grass

Barley grass is also an effective natural remedy for treating dengue fever as it can increase blood platelet count. As barley grass has good antiviral and antioxidant properties, it can be used effectively for fighting against the viral infection that leads to dengue fever.

  • Orange Juice

Citrus fruits like orange are beneficial in treating conditions like dengue fever. The presence of Vitamin C in fruits like orange helps in improving the body’s immunity. It also plays a major role in the process of detoxification. It initiates cell repair and combats various infections.

  • Hydration 

Dehydration is one of the major side effects of dengue. Taking plenty of fluids helps the body in staying hydrated. Adequate hydration detoxifies the body. It also helps in alleviating the symptoms of dengue-like headaches and muscle cramps.
