Hyperpigmentation refers to the residual inflammation of the skin after it has healed from the breakout of acne in various forms such as pimples, cysts, and blemishes. The dark and discolored spots that remain on the skin long after the acne is treated are known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The areas of hyperpigmentation may be black, brown, red, pink, or purple depending on the skin tone and the severity of the acne outbreak.
The amount of inflammation that occurs on the acne also reflects on the hyperpigmentation. Along with undergoing all these treatment methods, it is also essential to nourish the skin by the consumption of plenty of water and by the intake of a well-balanced diet and avoiding foods that increase inflammation such as dairy products, processed meat, gluten, and foods rich in sugar and fat.
