What is CLA?
Let’s begin with the basics. CLA or conjugated linoleic acid belongs to a family of fatty acids, primarily containing omega-6-fatty acids is obtained from meat such as beef, lamb and dairy products. It is a naturally occurring fatt acid, and even though it’s not an essential nutrient, its usually taken as a supplement due to its fat burning properties.
The word ‘conjugated’, refers to the type of double bonds arranged between the molecules. There are in total 28 forms of CLA, based on the arrangement of the double bonds in various ways.
How does CLA work?
The exact mechanism followed by CLA, by which it reduces fat is still disputable. It’s purported to reduce the body fat and regulate fat metabolism, which helps the body convert food more efficiently into energy while also boosting the basal metabolic rate.. And according to some evidence, it reduces the accumulation of triglycerides and adipocyte differentiation which in simpler terms means that it keeps your body from building fat stores.
CLA Weight Loss Results
According to animal studies, CLA has shown conclusive results in reducing body fat in many ways.
As per the Norwegian study published in The Journal of Nutrition in 2000, CLA reduced body fat and preserved muscle tissue in overweight or obese people who did not change their diet. According to the project manager of thee research study, individuals in the CLA group lost six more pounds of body fat, on average, compared to those in the placebo group.
In the study in The Journal of Internal Medicine Research, it was found that CLA reduced body fat in healthy exercising humans of normal body weight. And according to a research on the International Journal of Obesity, CLA reduced abdominal fat in obese men, and Louisiana State University scientists showed up to an 88 percent reduction in the body fat of male mice who were fed CLA in span of six weeks.
Therefore, several studies indicated fat loss in humans, however, there exist many studies which have shown no effect at all.

To sum up, CLA has displayed a number of effects including reduction of fat, maintenance of weight, strengthening of muscles in many studies, but, there is a need for more precise and accurate studies of CLA in humans in vivo that will further investigate and evaluate all the findings on human consumption of CLA.
Therefore, taking CLA or not is totally up to you. But one should make sure to be aware of all the facts before buying. Since, there is a chance that conjugated linoleic acid might show significant weight loss but there is also a possibility that you may notice no difference as such.
