The accumulation of fluid in the various body joints such as the knees, hips, ankles, feet, arms, wrists, and shoulders is known as joint inflammation. The characteristic symptoms of joint inflammation include pain, stiffness, and swelling in the areas that are affected along with the joints losing their natural shape. Some of the most common causes of joint inflammation are injuries, infections, overuse, and other underlying health problems. 

These conditions trigger the body to produce inflammatory responses which in turn cause fluid to get accumulated in the tissues surrounding the joints causing them to get inflamed. The various effects of joint inflammation include swelling, pain, increase in the fluids in the joints, cartilage, or bones leading to their damage and subsequent bone loss. The various causes of joint inflammation are:


When the joints get injured mechanically, inflammation occurs and structural damage takes place. Reduced mobility in the joints, muscles, and nerves also irritates and may often lead to pain. Untreated issues of joint immobility also cause chronic pain, inflammation, and other associated damage. The long term effects of these conditioners may trigger a weakening of the muscles which further promotes joint inflammation. 

Consumption of inflammatory foods 

The inflammation in the body can be worsened because of the intake of inflammatory foods that include excessive sugar-containing products, refined carbohydrates, refined oils, products that contain high amounts of artificial preservatives, processed animal products, sweetened and aerated beverages, dairy products, and junk foods. 

Imbalances in the blood sugar levels 

The intake of inflammatory foods triggers inflammation in the body which in turn promotes insulin resistance along with obesity thereby increasing joint inflammation. By consuming foods that have anti-inflammatory properties along with a balanced nutrient-filled diet, the risk of developing insulin resistance, obesity, and associated joint inflammation can be kept in check. Studies show that those individuals who are suffering from joint inflammation also develop high levels of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1C) which is a long-term blood glucose level indicator. 

Dysbiosis and leaky gut syndrome 

When the gut flora is imbalanced, dysbiosis occurs which further affects the entire body by causing disorders such as leaky gut syndrome where the gut lining permits the movement of bacteria, toxins, and other impurities into the bloodstream. These types of disorders cause inflammation all over the body including the joints. By treating the underlying condition associated with dysbiosis and leaky gut syndrome, the inflammation in the joints can be controlled and homeostasis of the microbiomes can be achieved. 

Stress and improper sleep habits 

Emotional, mental, social, and physical stress triggers the immune system for producing an inflammatory response which can further aggravate joint inflammation. Stress can also contribute to loss of sleep therapy further increasing joint inflammation and pain. 

Environmental factors 

Various toxins present in the environment such as air pollution, impurities in the tap water, body and beauty products, and plastic ingredients increase the risk of developing inflammation in the body and promote joint inflammation. 

Chronic infections 

Health conditions such as Lyme disease and the Epstein Barr virus (EBV) may cause inflammation and increase joint pain and inflammation where the joints, tendons, and muscle pain are the commonly occurring symptoms. 

Vitamin D deficiency 

The deficiency of vitamin D causes the weakening of the bones leading to various body conditions such as joint inflammation and cartilage disorders. Supplementing with vitamin D is beneficial in inhibiting erosion of the cartilage thereby preventing joint inflammation. 

Some of the natural remedies for alleviating the symptoms associated with joint inflammation include:

Anti-inflammatory diet

Studies show that intake of foods that have inflammatory properties such as refined sugar and oil, processed meat, dairy products, and artificial preservatives should be avoided in cases of chronic joint inflammation, and foods that should be included in the diet include fresh fruits and vegetables, greens, mushrooms, herbs and spices, nuts, seeds, poultry and eggs and wild-caught fish which have proven anti-inflammatory effects. 

Optimizing vitamin D levels

Research shows that deficiency of vitamin D may trigger joint inflammation as adequate amounts of vitamin D help in reducing the inflammation and also the joint pain associated with this condition. Vitamin D can be obtained from food sources such as oily fish, liver, and egg yolk. 

Omega 3 fatty acids 

Studies prove that supplementing with omega 3 fatty acid supplements such as Alvizia salmon fish oil capsules helps in reducing the inflammation and also provides symptomatic relief of the associated joint pain. Other naturally occurring sources of omega 3 fatty acids are fish, seafood, walnuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, and hemp seeds. 


The active ingredient of turmeric which is an anti-inflammatory herb is known as Curcumin which is beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of joint inflammation. 

Reducing stress and getting adequate sleep

Often the underlying cause of inflammation in the body is stress along with lack of adequate sleep. Various methods of de-stressing should be employed such as meditation, breathing exercises, muscle relaxation techniques, and yoga. A routine should be set up and followed diligently for getting proper sleep and distractions should be avoided around sleep time. 

Regular exercise 

Stress and inflammation are often caused by following a sedentary lifestyle. Including light exercises in the daily routine such as biking, playing, dancing, stretching, walking and yoga contribute to breaking this unhealthy habit and promotes overall health. 

Implementing ketosis 

In individuals who are on a low carb ketogenic diet during conditions such as fasting, the body does not get enough supply of glucose due to which starts the absorption of fats instead of glucose which slowly leads to ketosis. In such conditions, switching to a low carbohydrate diet such as a ketogenic diet is beneficial in reducing pain in people suffering from joint inflammation. 

Intermittent fasting 

This type of fasting refers to the method of eating in between periods of fasting. It is similar in terms of benefits to that of a ketogenic diet as it contributes to the reduction of inflammation, insulin resistance, pain, and the risk of developing associated health disorders.
