L-ARGININE: BOOST YOUR STAMINA!

L-ARGININE: BOOST YOUR STAMINA!

L-arginine or simply called as arginine is an alpha-amino acid. It carries an alpha-amino group, an alpha-carboxylic acid group and a side chain containing a 3-carbon aliphatic straight-chain ending with a guanidino group.

It is a semi-essential amino acid and that depends on the developmental stage of a human being. For infants, it is an essential amino acid as they are not able to synthesize arginine and for healthy individuals do not require supplements as it is found in all protein-containing foods.

It is synthesized in the body from glutamine via citrulline. It occurs majorly in the intestinal-renal axis, the epithelial cells of small intestine produce citrulline from glutamine which is carried to the proximal tubule cells of the kidney.

This citrulline gets converted to arginine. L-Arginine is widely used in the biosynthesis of proteins. It also plays a major role in wound healing, removing ammonia, enhancing the immune system functions.

Sources of arginine:

Red meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, nuts, beans, seeds and green leafy vegetables. Turkey, soybeans, peanuts are rich sources of L-Arginine.

L-Arginine is sufficiently provided in the diets. It becomes an essential component and should be provided through supplements for individuals faced with stress, in recovery from burns, injury, sepsis, in kidney and small intestine damage.

L-Arginine is also a popular supplement of athletes because of its therapeutic benefits like improved blood circulation, enhanced immune response, increased stamina and weight.

Health Benefits of arginine

Boosts Stamina:

L-Arginine is popularly used by athletes as a supplement to increase stamina. In a research study on 23 subjects were given arginine for 12 weeks. The result indicated a positive increase in functionality, strength, fat-free mass, and protein synthesis.

Another study was conducted on 16 healthy male subjects, the results indicated that arginine before workout significantly increased pre-workout energy levels, increased muscle pump immediately following a workout, and decreased biomarkers of muscle damage immediately after a workout and during recovery. These results demonstrate multiple benefits of arginine as a functional workout ingredient.

Improves blood circulation:

Arginine effectively improves the blood circulation as it releases nitric oxide causing vasodilation and thus improves the blood flow by dilating the blood vessels. In a study on hypercholesterolemic humans, vasodilation is impaired. It was found that this abnormality can be improved acutely by the administration of L-arginine, that occurs by increasing the synthesis of endothelium-derived relaxing factor (nitric oxide).

Aids in wound healing:

Arginine has beneficial properties in wound healing. In a research study, it was found that Arginine-deficient animals showed impaired wound healing. Those animals were fed with arginine supplements. The results showed that arginine has two roles in wounded animals. It is essential for the synthesis of the increased amounts of reparative collagen required for wound healing, and it decreases some of the negative aspects of the metabolic responses to injury. These are thought to be associated with an arginine-induced growth hormone release.

Treats Erectile Dysfunction:

Arginine is commonly used as a supplement for treating erectile dysfunction. In a research study, L arginine along with drug Pycnogenol has been proven as a dietary supplement that is effective and safe in Japanese patients with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction.[5]
