L-arginine or simply called as arginine is an alpha-amino acid. It carries an alpha-amino group, an alpha-carboxylic acid group and a side chain containing a 3-carbon aliphatic straight-chain ending with a guanidino group.
It is a semi-essential amino acid and that depends on the developmental stage of a human being. For infants, it is an essential amino acid as they are not able to synthesize arginine and for healthy individuals do not require supplements as it is found in all protein-containing foods.
It is synthesized in the body from glutamine via citrulline. It occurs majorly in the intestinal-renal axis, the epithelial cells of small intestine produce citrulline from glutamine which is carried to the proximal tubule cells of the kidney.
