1. What is L-Carnitine?

L-carnitine is naturally occurring amino acid that is produced in the body. It is consumed as a nutrient as well as a supplement. Moreover, it plays a significant role in helping the body produce energy. To elucidate, it transports the fatty acid into the mitochondria of the cells which being power houses of the cell converts these fats into usable energy. The body can itself produce L-carnitine using amino acids lysine and methionine, with adequate amount of Vitamin-C.

2. Benefits of L-Carnitine

L-Carnitine's role majorly involves production of energy in the body and the working of mitochondria. Also, research has shown that taking l-carnitine orally or through IV can enhance red blood cell count during hemodialysis and can also be used to treat L-carnitine deficiency. Newer studies have shown different forms of L-carnitine have potential advantages regarding brain and heart diseases.

3. Side Effects

For the majority of population, intake of 2 grams or less per day of L-carnitine is safe and clear for long-term. Though some people might experience mild side effects such as nausea and vomiting. In addition, it can cause the breath, urine and sweat to have "fishy" odor. However, consumption of L-carnitine may cause increase in blood levels trimethylamine-N-oxide over a period of time and high-levels of TMAO is associated with atherosclerosis - clogging of arteries.

4. Does it have any effect on weight-Loss?

Theoretically, consumption of L-carnitine should help in aid of weight loss as this nutrient transports the fat to the mitochondria which burns the fat to produce energy. However, studies have shown that the difference between woman who were taking L-carnitine and those who weren't while exercising was none. Therefore, there was no increase in fat burning. Nonetheless, another research illustrated, which mostly consisted of obese or older individuals, increased fat burning. In conclusion, though the cellular mechanism shows it might aid in weight loss, a more intensive research is needed to support its weight loss benefits.
