LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS AND ITS USES

LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS AND ITS USES

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a type of probiotic. It can be obtained from fermented foods, yogurt, and supplements. Lactobacillus acidophilus is a type of bacteria that is predominantly found in the intestines. The best food sources of L. acidophilus are yogurt, kefir, miso, tempeh, cheese, and Sauerkraut. Its major role in the body is to form lactic acid which it does by producing an enzyme called lactase. Lactase is essential for the breakdown of lactose, a sugar found in milk, into lactic acid. Lactobacilli, particularly L. acidophilus, is often used as probiotics which are “live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host”.

The 9 ways in which Lactobacillus acidophilus benefits the health are:

  • It helps in reducing cholesterol levels

High cholesterol levels in the body increase the risk of developing heart disease. This is mainly true for “bad” LDL cholesterol. Studies show that the consumption of probiotics such as L. acidophilus helps in reducing cholesterol levels. Taking L. acidophilus in combination with other probiotics for about six weeks significantly lowers the total and LDL cholesterol levels in the body. Consumption of L. acidophilus with prebiotics along with indigestible carbs helps in the growth of good bacteria, also helps in increasing HDL cholesterol, and lowers the blood glucose levels in the body. It has also been shown that intake of yogurt supplemented with L. acidophilus helps in significantly reducing cholesterol levels.

  • It may Prevent and Reduce the occurrence of Diarrhea

Diarrhea affects a large number of people and it can be dangerous if it can’t be controlled as it causes fluid loss and dehydration. Research shows that probiotics like L. acidophilus may help in preventing and reducing diarrhea that occurs as a result of various infections. It may also be effective in reducing diarrhea associated with the use of antibiotics. Traveler’s Diarrhea is a common occurrence in people who travel to different countries and are exposed to new foods and environments. Studies show that probiotics such as lactobacillus acidophilus are effective in preventing traveler’s diarrhea.

  • It relieves the Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The symptoms associated with Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) include abdominal pain, bloating, and unusual bowel movements. One of the important causes of IBS may be the presence of different types of bacteria in the intestines. Studies show that in people with functional bowel disorders such as IBS, intake of a combination of L. acidophilus and other probiotics provides significant relief from bloating along with abdominal pain.

  • It is helpful in the treatment and Prevention of Vaginal Infections

The common types of vaginal infections are Vaginosis and vulvovaginal candidiasis. It has been proven that L. acidophilus can help treat and prevent such infections. Lactobacilli are the most predominantly found bacteria in the vagina which fails when there are vaginal infections. They produce lactic acid, which is effective in preventing the growth of other harmful bacteria.

acidophilus when used as a probiotic supplement is effective in preventing and treating vaginal infections as it increases the number of lactobacilli in the vagina. Intake of yogurt that is rich in L. acidophilus may also prevent vaginal infections.
  • It may help in achieving Weight Loss

The bacteria that are present in the intestines help in regulating the process of food digestion and several other bodily processes thus influence the body weight. It is studied that taking probiotics may help in losing bodyweight.

  • It helps in Preventing and Reducing the symptoms of Cold and Flu

Healthy bacteria like L. acidophilus are effective in boosting the immune system. Thus they have a beneficial effect in reducing the risk of developing viral infections. Research shows that the consumption of probiotics may prevent and improve symptoms of the common cold. L. acidophilus has also been associated with reducing the symptoms of colds in children.

Daily intake of L. acidophilus probiotics is proven to reduce the incidence of fever, coughing, and antibiotic use.

  • It is effective in Preventing and Reducing Allergy Symptoms

Allergies are common occurrences in many individuals. It triggers symptoms such as a runny nose and itchy eyes. It is studied that taking certain probiotics such as L. acidophilus can reduce the symptoms that occur as a result of allergies. Consumption of L. acidophilus is associated with reducing nasal swelling and other symptoms in children with perennial allergic rhinitis which is a disorder that causes hay fever-like symptoms throughout the year.

Intake of L. acidophilus and other probiotics is effective in reducing runny nose, nasal blocking, and other symptoms of pollen allergy.

The mechanism of action of these probiotics is that they reduce the amount of an antibody called immunoglobulin A, which is involved in these allergic reactions, in the intestines.

  • It prevents and reduces the Symptoms of Eczema

Eczema is defined as a condition in which the skin becomes inflamed causing itching and pain. Atopic dermatitis is a commonly occurring type of eczema. It is studied that intake of probiotics is beneficial in reducing the symptoms of eczema which is an inflammatory condition in both adults and children. Research shows that giving a mix of L. acidophilus and other probiotics to pregnant women and their infants during the first three months of life reduced the prevalence of eczema in later stages of life. Using L. acidophilus along with traditional medical therapy shows marked improvement in the condition of atopic dermatitis symptoms in children.

  • It is useful for improving the Gut Health

The gut is lined with a huge amount of bacteria that play an important role in maintaining overall health. Consumption of L. acidophilus is known to produce lactic acid which may prevent harmful bacteria from colonizing the intestines. They also ensure the lining of the intestines stays intact during inflammation. Consumption of L. acidophilus can also increase the amounts of other healthy bacteria in the gut, including other lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. It is associated with an increase in the levels of short-chain fatty acids, such as butyrate, which are essential for promoting gut health. Consumption of Alvizia multivitamins for women which contains L. acidophilus supports the maintenance of a healthy immune system.
