Lycopene is a phytonutrient that is known to be an antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic agent. Lycopene is most commonly found in tomatoes, along with a large number of fruits and vegetables. Phytonutrients are not originally formed by the human body. They are produced by plants as a defense mechanism against environmental damage caused by various factors such as pests, toxins, and damage due to exposure to ultraviolet rays. lycopene is a fat-soluble nutrient. It gets absorbed better when consumed in combination with other ingredients like fats, avocados, olive oil, or seeds. Lycopene is effective in the treatment of this condition as it initiates the process of apoptosis in the infecting fungal cells. This method of treatment is effective in reducing the symptoms associated with both candidiasis in the mouth and vaginal yeast infections. The antioxidant properties of lycopene have been found to repair damage in the blood-spinal cord barrier and cause minimal damage in cases of spinal cord injury. This is considered to be a very beneficial aspect as the destruction of that barrier is the reason why paralysis occurs in people who suffer spinal cord injury.

Because of its powerful antioxidative effects, lycopene plays an important role in preventing and delaying the onset of several types of cancer, making any foods containing inadequate amounts of potent cancer-fighting foods. The ability of lycopene in slowing down the growth of various cancers such as breast and prostate cancer is because it is effective in interrupting signal pathways that would normally cause the tumors to grow and spread rapidly. A significant correlation has been established between increased consumption of lycopene and a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer. 

It is known that the intake of lycopene also stunts the growth of renal cell carcinoma which is one of the most common types of malignant kidney tumors. Some of the other useful cancer-related treatments by using lycopene are in its use against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection which is a major cause of uterine cancer. People who are known to supplement their diets with adequate amounts of lycopene can recover faster from this cancer-causing infection and obtain symptomatic relief.

Lycopene is known to protect the eyes from oxidative stress which is the causative factor for triggering the onset of common eye diseases. It is also effective in lowering the overall body mass of the patients.
