A healthy diet should contain not only adequate amounts of whole grains, cereals, fruits and vegetables, protein, dairy products, carbohydrates, and minerals, including naturally occurring herbs and spices also help in maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle. The addition of herbs and spices in the food not only imparts taste of the food, but also helps in fighting against infections because of their antioxidant properties. Some of the herbs and spices that are found in nature and are useful in the treatment of various ailments including:


The presence of capsaicin in cayenne makes it effective in providing pain relief which is the reason why it is an important constituent of various creams and prescription ointments used in topical pain treatment. Capsaicin is responsible for deactivating a neurotransmitter known as substance P which triggers inflammation in the body. Cayenne also finds its use for treating pain in diabetics and people suffering from shingles. Cayenne is known for being effective in relieving the symptoms of common cold and throat congestion as it can shrink blood vessels in the throat and nose. Cayenne also helps in regulating metabolism. 


Cinnamon has long been used in the traditional system of medicine as it is known to boost blood glucose control in diabetic patients. Cinnamon has the natural ability to stimulate the functioning of insulin thereby reducing the blood glucose levels in the body. Cinnamon also has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The presence of polyphenols which are powerful antioxidants helps in the proper functioning of the heart. As cinnamon is a rich source of fiber, it is also beneficial in reducing the symptoms of heartburn. 


Cloves are aromatic spices that have anti-inflammatory effects due to the presence of a chemical known as eugenol. Hence cloves are known to stop the development of inflammation in the body. Because of their antioxidant properties, cloves are effective in reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Cloves are also known to reduce the damage caused by arthritis to the bone and the cartilage. Cloves are effective in enhancing the functioning of insulin. As they can impart a numbing effect, cloves can be used for relieving toothache. 


One of the most commonly used digestive aids while cooking food is coriander. Coriander can reduce intestinal spasms that cause diarrhea and thus they are used for improving the symptoms in people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. Coriander is also an effective antioxidant. 


Garlic is known to reduce the risk of developing heart disease when consumed regularly. As it is effective in reducing the cholesterol levels in the body along with having potent antioxidant properties. Garlic also contains compounds that can eliminate carcinogenic elements from the body before they can cause damage to the cellular DNA. 

Nutmeg and mace

Nutmeg and mace have potent antibacterial effects which help in killing the bacteria that is present in the mouth that causes the development of cavities. They are also used as antidepressants as they can inhibit enzymes that are known to also trigger Alzheimer’s disease. Nutmeg and mace help in boosting memory power. 

Fennel seeds 

The main action of fennel seeds is that they help in reducing menstrual cramps which is one of the major symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. The presence of phytochemicals in the fennel seeds such as phytoestrogen-like compounds helps in relieving cramps as well as colic. 

Evening primrose 

The oil that is extracted from evening primrose is rich in gamma linoleic acid. The various uses of evening primrose oil include providing relief from the symptoms like swelling, itching, and redness that are associated with eczema. The astringent and mucilaginous properties of evening primrose oil make it useful in the treatment of cold and cough. Evening primrose oil is also effective in treating a wide range of health disorders such as arthritis, diabetes, elevated blood pressure, and schizophrenia. Alviza evening primrose oil supplements are useful in reducing the painful symptoms associated with premenstrual syndrome. 


Dill is also effective in the treatment of digestive disorders such as heartburn and diarrhea. Dill is a good home remedy for reducing flatulence and colic that accompanies it. Regularly chewing dill seeds are effective in reducing pyorrhoea. 


Oregano is a rich source of flavonoids, phenolic acid and various phytochemicals. The various uses of oregano include as a disinfectant for the treatment of problems associated with the ear, nose, and throat along with many kinds of respiratory disorders. 


Because of its antibacterial and antiviral properties, basil is identified as a source for improving the immune system. The consumption of basil is effective in elevating the mood and clears brain fog. Basil also helps in reducing the levels of inflammation in the body. As it stimulates the production of adrenaline and noradrenaline, basil is effective in reducing the levels of stress in the body. 


Mint is known to relax the airways and it is also effective in fighting against the invading bacteria and viruses. Since mint reduces the sensation of pain by inhibiting the pain receptors, it is often used as a medication for the treatment of headaches. 


Parsley is a rich source of chlorophyll and carotenoids. Parsley helps treat various health disorders like urinary infections, gastrointestinal, kidney stones, anaemia, and osteoarthritis.
