MILK THISTLE: LIVER DETOXIFIER

Do you know Liver is your body's detox hub! It is the largest internal organ and the wellbeing of it can ensure the overall health of your body.

If you suffer from hormonal imbalance, iron deficiencies (like serum iron, ferritin, transferrin) or deficiency in vitamin B12 or folic acid, then it means you suffer from a liver disorder. Liver health is extremely crucial as the liver performs various functions like:

  • Bile production which breaks down the dietary fats in the body and excretion.

  • Metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates

  • Helps in enzyme activation

  • Blood detoxification and purification

  • Synthesis of plasma proteins such as albumin and various clotting factors

  • Storage of vitamins- A, D, E, K (after absorption by bile).

Seeing these functions, it is imperative that the liver is an important precursor of vital body processes. This shows that without Liver there is no life!

Liver diseases are caused by viruses such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, drugs, poisons, too much Alcohol, Cancer and sometimes inherited like the Wilsons disease and Hemochromatosis. When the liver is damaged or in the early stages not working well enough, then detoxification process of the body is impaired.

Detoxification is one of the major physiological process carried out by liver by converting the fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble waste products which are then eliminated by kidneys and large intestine through urine and bowel actions respectively. Although other organs, enzymes, vitamins (E, C, B12), amino acids are involved the detoxification of the body and purification of blood, the liver is the main player in this process which initiates it and also provides the required nutrients to carry the process.

When the natural detoxification process is disrupted due to any disorders, it can be treated using medicines or through natural treatments. One such natural supplement is Milk thistle!

What is Milk Thistle?

Milk thistle is an herbal plant native to Europe, Russia and now grows in the southern U.S.A., South America and California. Milk thistle is obtained from the milky sap that originates from the leaves when they are broken. The plant is known as Silybum Marianum, it has purple to red flowers with white veins. The main constituent is called Silymarin.
Silymarin is a potent antioxidant which supports liver repair, prevents liver fibrosis and reduces effects of alcohol consumption on the liver, eases the symptoms of Liver Cirrhosis, liver cancer, jaundice and fatty liver disease, helps ease inflammation and promotes cell repair.

Since ancient times, people have employed milk thistle for liver disorders, such as hepatitis and cirrhosis, and gallbladder problems. Milk thistle (Silymarin) is commonly used as an herbal supplement in the United States for liver problems. It is made available as capsules, powders, and extracts. Studies suggest that Silymarin protects against genomic injury, increase hepatocyte protein synthesis, decrease the activity of tumour promoters, stabilize mast cells, chelated iron, and slow calcium metabolism.

Milk thistle has been used as a cytoprotectant for the treatment of liver disease, for the treatment and prevention of cancer, and as a supportive treatment of Amanita Phalloides poisoning.

Silymarin acts as an antioxidant by reducing free radical production and lipid peroxidation has anti-fibrotic activity and may act as a toxin blockade agent by inhibiting the binding of toxins to the hepatocyte cell membrane receptors.

Clinical trials assessed milk thistle in 915 patients with alcoholic and/or hepatitis B or C virus liver diseases, and they found a reduction in liver health mortality.
