Nasal polyps are growths that line the nasal passages also known as sinuses. Nasal polyps look like peelling grapes or teardrops in appearance. If nasal polyps get too large, they may block the nasal passages causing difficulty in breathing. Even though they are soft, and painless, they usually manifest due to various health conditions such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, aspirin allergy, sinus infections, acute and chronic infections, and cystic fibrosis. Nasal polyps most commonly occur in younge-to-middle-aged adults.

Signs & Symptoms of Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps can be either antrochoanal polyps or ethmoidal polyps. Antrochoanal polyps are less common and originate in the maxillary sinuses. Ethmoidal polyps usually develop from the ethmoidal sinuses. The signs and symptoms of nasal polyps are Stuffy or blocked nose, Sneezing, Postnasal drip, Runny nose, Facial pain, Difficulty with a sense of smell, Loss of taste, Itching around the eyes, Infections, Pain in the upper teeth, Vocal changes, Sense of pressure over the forehead and face and Snoring. Nasal polyps may cause respiratory distress as they block airflow and fluid drainage. They also result in chronic inflammation and various complications such as Obstructive sleep apnea,  flare-ups of Asthma, and Sinus infections.

Natural Treatments for nasal polyps 

Many natural treatments and home remedies have been identified to treat nasal polyps. Dietary changes include immune-boosting foods and lifestyle modifications along with the use of essential oils and supplements are beneficial in providing relief from nasal polyps. 

  1. Tea Tree Oil

Because of its antimicrobial properties, tea tree oil is effective when used in the nasal passages in relieving respiratory distress. 

  1. Bromelain

Studies show that eating the fiber-dense core of pineapple provides the anti-inflammatory immune system-boosting with an enzyme that helps in reducing swelling. The use of bromelain supplements decreases the severity of the symptoms associated with sinus infections. It also protects against underlying allergies and asthma.

  1. Magnesium

As magnesium has anti-inflammatory properties, it relaxes body tissue and improves body functions. Eating a diet rich in magnesium foods such as leafy green vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes or taking magnesium in the form of supplements is beneficial in those individuals having nasal polyps.

  1. Goldenseal

Drinking tea made from the herb goldenseal can soothe nasal polyps as it has potent antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. 

  1. Zinc

Foods like salmon, cocoa, and chickpeas are good sources of zinc. Zinc helps in fighting colds, and it may also be effective in treating chronic sinusitis, and other symptoms of nasal polyps. Zinc supplements can also be used in cases of nasal polyps. 

  1. Probiotics

The use of probiotics can boost the immune system. It is necessary for maintaining optimal microbiome levels as it can impact sinus health. Eating sour and probiotic-rich foods boosts the probiotics in the system. They include high-fiber foods such as chia seeds and sweet potatoes. An easy way to boost probiotic intake is to take daily supplements of probiotics.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric is useful for treating nasal polyps and sinus infections because it is a powerful anti-inflammatory compound due to the presence of Curcumin. Turmeric can also be used as a supplement.

  1. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne peppers are little red chili peppers that are rich in vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin E, potassium, beta carotene, manganese, and flavonoids. They have good antioxidants properties. The presence of vitamin A in cayenne pepper helps in reducing inflammation along with preventing inflamed nasal passages. It also acts in providing relief from allergies. It also helps boost the immune system.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

The use of apple cider vinegar is effective in breaking up the mucus which makes it a great remedy for providing relief from seasonal allergies. As apple cider vinegar is rich in essential vitamins, it boosts probiotic action, making it a useful remedy for cold. 

  1. Garlic

Because of its antiviral and antifungal properties, garlic can help in relieving the symptoms of the common cold. The presence of Allicin in garlic gives it the ability to kill microorganisms thus preventing infection.

  1. Onions

Onions are filled with antioxidants that help in protecting against inflammation. Including onions in the diet are beneficial in those individuals who suffer from asthma or respiratory infections as it contains quercetin.

  1. Greens and Cabbage Family Vegetables

An immune-boosting diet includes foods rich in vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and beta-carotene. Greens and cabbage family vegetables, such as broccoli, spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes, apricots, mango, melon, winter squash, and kale are great sources of antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties.

  1. Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids

Salmon and flaxseed are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids which can boost the immune system. They also protect the body against inflammation. These properties of omega 3 fatty acids make them useful in key in fighting sinus infections and nasal polyps. Alvizia flaxseed oil supplements rich in omega 3 fatty acids help in boosting the immune system. 

  1. Avoiding Alcohol Consumption

Studies show that excessive alcohol consumption may irritate the lining of the lungs and trigger sinus problems, including nasal polyps and rhinitis. 

  1. Avoiding Food Allergens

It is essential to eliminate food allergens from the diet to prevent nasal polyps. Common allergens such as dairy products, wheat, eggs, yeast, soy or gluten, should be identified and removed from the diet to reduce inflammation and allergic reactions.

  1. Steam Inhalation

Humidifying the air is found to be beneficial in moistening the airway and sinuses. Steam inhalation helps in thinning the nasal mucus and prevents the blockage and inflammation of the breathing passages in individuals suffering from nasal polyps. 

  1. Nasal Irrigation 

Nasal irrigation is the method of flushing the sinuses with warm and salty water. It helps clear nasal congestion. It also provides relief from colds, allergies, and sinus infections. This can also be done by using Neti pots. 

  1. Hydration

Along with nasal irrigation and steam inhalation, other important ways of improving the symptoms of nasal polyps include drinking plenty of water.  Staying hydrated moistens the nasal passages and helps in thinning mucus providing relief from respiratory problems.

  1. Deep Breathing Exercises

Deep breathing exercises help in improving the symptoms associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). These exercises are effective in increasing lung capacity. They also help in keeping the breathing passages clear in conditions like nasal polyps.
