Niacinamide is a type of vitamin B3. It is used for the treatment of a wide number of body conditions such as pellagra, skin disorders and it also helps in reducing the symptoms associated with diabetes. Topical formulations that contain vitamin B3 are used for acne, eczema, psoriasis, and other skin conditions. Vitamin B3 consists of two forms: niacinamide and nicotinic acid. Niacinamide is needed for the Synthesis of NAD+/NADH and NADP+/NADPH which help in delaying the onset of aging and support cell repair. Niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin. It can be found in animal products (such as meat and poultry) and non-processed cereals. It is also available as a supplement. The major functions of niacinamide are :
- Fights skin inflammation, acne, rosacea, and psoriasis
- Reduces dark spots and skin aging
- It May Help in reducing sugar levels in diabetics
- Lowers high phosphate levels
- May improve arthritis
Symptoms of a mild niacin deficiency include Indigestion, Fatigue, Canker sores, and Nausea.
Severe niacin deficiency causes pellagra, whose characteristic symptoms are dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia (known as the “three Ds”). The use of niacinamide is helpful for the prevention and treatment of pellagra.
The major cause of acne is the excessive production of sebum, which makes skin oily. Topical application of niacinamide is known to lower the production of oil in the skin thereby reducing acne. Some individuals with acne also suffer from dry and damaged skin. Topical niacinamide increases the secretion of beneficial skin lipids known as ceramides. Niacinamide is also effective in strengthening the skin barrier. It moisturizes the skin and reduces water loss. Niacinamide increases the hydration in the outer skin layer known as the stratum corneum.
The application of niacinamide gel is beneficial in improving acne and decreasing acne lesions.
Intake of niacinamide along with zinc, copper, azelaic acid, pyridoxine, and folic acid reduces the severity of acne and improves the overall appearance of the skin.
Skin Irritation and Inflammation
Rosacea - A topical gel containing niacinamide is effective in reducing the symptoms associated with rosacea such as skin peeling, redness, lesions, and irritation while improving hydration and the skin barrier health.
Psoriasis - Application of Topical niacinamide in combination with a synthetic form of vitamin D (calcipotriol) improved psoriasis.
Seborrheic Dermatitis - In patients suffering from facial seborrheic dermatitis, niacinamide 4% cream is beneficial in reducing the symptoms such as redness and scaling.
Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema) - Niacinamide 2% cream helps reduce skin water loss and improves skin hydration in patients suffering from atopic dermatitis.
Studies show that niacinamide is effective in relieving irritated and inflamed skin by lowering inflammatory compounds such as NF-kB, IL-1, IL-6, TNF-a, and IL-12. Intake of niacinamide also helps in blocking the growth of fungi like Candida albicans, Trichophyton rubrum, and Trichophyton mentagrophytes which trigger yeast infections in the skin.
Dark Skin Patches
Application of topical niacinamide is useful for skin lightening. In individuals suffering from the presence of dark patches on the face, niacinamide reduces skin pigmentation, inflammation, and premature aging. It also improves the evenness of the skin tone and texture in those who have hyperpigmentation (dark skin spots). When Combined with vitamin C and ultrasound radiation, topical niacinamide decreases the coloring of the skin in people with hyperpigmentation. Studies show that niacinamide blocks the transfer of melanin deposits on the outer layer of the skin, which causes a skin-lightening effect.
Niacinamide initiates the production of collagen and protective proteins such as keratin, filaggrin, and involucrin. These provide structure and elasticity to the skin. Niacinamide is also effective in getting rid of wrinkles and it prevents premature skin aging that occurs from the damage caused by exposure to UV rays.
Niacinamide delays skin aging by preventing DNA damage and reducing the levels of oxidative stress in the body. It is useful in the removal of fine lines, skin redness, and yellowing. It is beneficial in improving skin elasticity. Studies show that topical creams that contain niacinamide, herbs, and vitamins such as retinol, resveratrol, safflower, vitamin E, kinetin, help in reducing the appearance of wrinkles and improve skin complexion.
High Phosphate Levels
Patients suffering from chronic kidney disease have underlying dangerous levels of high blood phosphate levels. Supplementing with oral niacinamide is associated with decreasing high blood phosphate and increasing the “good” HDL cholesterol in kidney patients. Studies show that niacinamide reduces the activity of a transporter that carries sodium and phosphorus from the gut into the bloodstream, thereby decreasing the phosphorus blood levels.
Type 1 - In type 1 diabetes, beta cells in the pancreas which produce insulin get destroyed. Type 1 diabetes is characterized by Low insulin, high blood sugar, and low C-peptide levels in the body. Studies show that the addition of niacinamide to insulin therapy helps in achieving normal C-peptide levels. This in turn helps in the preservation of the functioning of beta cells and delays the onset of disease.
Type 2 - Niacinamide regulates the levels of C-peptide and blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. Intake of niacinamide is associated with the prevention of diabetes by reducing beta-cell destruction, lowering oxidative stress, improving immune function, and maintaining normal insulin and glucose levels.
Niacinamide blocks the inflammatory compound IL-1, which causes the development of osteoarthritis. In people with osteoarthritis, niacinamide consumption is known to improve joint movement, lowers inflammation, and decrease the use of anti-inflammatory drugs.
In schizophrenic patients, supplements of vitamin B3 are known to improve the symptoms after regular use. Studies show that niacinamide is associated with reducing brain damage and improved recovery after stroke. The other function of nicotinamide is that it is helpful in lowering the oxidative stress in the brain and reverses the damage to blood vessels and nerve cells.
