Nutrition Made Simple

Have you ever wondered what happens to our cells after they finish the production of energy from food? How does our body manage to get rid of the by-products generated during this process?

Well, let's look at this process in a bit more detail and see what will happen in case of some deficiency.

Our cells utilize food to generate energy for proper functioning of our tissues. During this process some by-products are also generated which are called "Free Radicals". Proper removal of these radicals are very essential since if not removed can damage our cells and even our DNA. So, naturally our body generates antioxidants to neutralize these free radicals and prevent damage. Unfortunately in some diseased conditions and even deficiency (from diet) can lead to reduction in the levels of these protective agents which can lead to a number of health issues such as; stroke, heart diseases, emphysema, immune deficiency, respiratory diseases and skin problems like acne, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and dry skin.

How do these free radicals react to cause all this damage?

Free radicals are capable of independent existence and contain unpaired electrons in their atomic orbital. Radicals are called paramagnetic since they are weakly attracted to magnetic fields. Many radicals are highly reactive and can either generate or extract electrons from other molecules. The most common type of free radicals in diseased states are superoxides and hydroxyl radicals. Superoxide is produced by addition of electrons to oxygen and since this is produced hydrogen peroxide is also generated because of its spontaneous degradation. These reactive oxygen radicals damage our tissues by generation of hydroxyl radicals.

How do antioxidants act?

They simply neutralize the generated radicals by binding, breaking the chain of formation of radicals or reducing their production. Some naturally occurring ones include; Glutathione , Superoxide dismutase, catalase.

So, what can you do to prevent this?

It is very common for people not to take a balanced diet due to the hectic work schedule and hence develop various health conditions. In such cases it becomes crucial for us to have access to something which is easy and takes up less time to follow. You can easily find some natural alternatives for this such as BERRIES and BUCKTHORN.

Now let's have a look at both of them and see how they can help us?

Berries are not only used to make pie but are a rich source of natural antioxidants which you require to fulfill to maintain a healthy life. The berries develop their colour due to a pigment in them called anthocyanins which provides different colours to them such as ; black, blue, and red . The basic reason being the neutralization effect shown by the anti-oxidants on the free radicals which in turn suppress the eventual damage of cells or DNA of cells .

Quite similar to this is another naturally occurring herb called "SEA BUCKTHORN" (biological name : Elaeagnus rhamnoides ) also called as; Sallow thorn, Sandorn, Seedorn, Star-Bu. The leaves, fruits and flowers of this herb are used to make medicine to treat gout, skin rashes, gastrointestinal ulcers, arthritis and even measles. The seed or berry oil can be used to loosen phlegm; to treat conditions like asthma, angina or to reduce cholesterol levels. Moreover, it helps to balance our immune system and can treat intestinal diseases including ulcers and GERD.

Some people directly apply the berry concentrate or the oil on skin to prevent sunburn, radiation damage, or for wound healing like bedsores, burns. For the treatment of acne, dry skin, to slow aging of skin, hyperpigmentation and acne scars.
