PSORIASIS - ITS CAUSES, SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT

Psoriasis is a type of autoimmune disorder of the skin where there is the occurrence of prominent red, dry and scaly patches of the skin which causes itching and also pain which in most cases can be cured by treatment modalities such as topical application of corticosteroids and moisturizing creams. Psoriasis is a characteristic disease of the skin where the process of multiplication of the skin cells occurs rapidly and the forms of new cells of the skin take place at a faster pace with high chances of remission. The most commonly occurring types of psoriasis are:

  • Plaque psoriasis is associated with skin that is dry and inflamed along with white scales with intense itching. 
  • Nail psoriasis mainly occurs on the nails of the fingers and toes leading to their pitting and discoloration.
  • Inverse psoriasis is seen in the region of armpits, groin, breast, and genitals where increased sweating leads to more inflammation. 
  • Pustular psoriasis occurs on the hands and feet with widespread patches.
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis where the entire body is covered with red and itchy rashes. 

Some of the most commonly associated symptoms of psoriasis include the presence of red and inflamed scaly patches on the skin, cracking and bleeding dry skin, the occurrence of dry plaques in the patches that are already red and inflamed, itching, soreness, pain, and burning sensation around the patches, thick and pitted nails and joints that can be painful and swollen. 

The main causes of psoriasis are:

Chronic inflammation 

Studies show that most individuals suffering from psoriasis also have underlying health problems such as inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and a large number of disorders of the skin such as rosacea, dermatitis, and acne. Excessive intake of inflammatory foods like refined sugar, refined oils, and processed foods also leads to promoting inflammation in the body thereby worsening psoriasis. 

Gut infections 

Research has found a strong link between the issues of skin to the occurrence of gastrointestinal disorders. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and leaky gut syndrome have often been found to be associated with the co-occurrence of skin infections as they are effective in increasing the inflammation. 

Food sensitivity 

Some people are sensitive to particular kinds of foods which in turn can increase inflammation and cause various disturbances in the immune response and skin disorders which may cause flare-ups in conditions like psoriasis. Such types of foods must be identified and removed from the diet. Some of the most widely recognized trigger factors in the food which may cause various adverse reactions in the body include gluten, excessive sugar consumption, spicy foods, dairy products, cheese, red meat, citrus fruits, and other types of junk food. 

Nutrient deficiencies 

Consumption of a diet that has inadequate amounts of essential nutrients may be the causative factor in the occurrence of various nutrient deficiencies. These nutrient deficiencies may be responsible for inflammation in the body which may, in turn, trigger a chain of health disorders one of which is psoriasis. 

Various nutrients have been identified as necessary for the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle such as omega 3 fatty acids which help in decreasing inflammation and other conditions like dry skin. Some other deficiencies that are associated with psoriasis include vitamin D and vitamin A along with zinc and copper. Studies show that the levels of copper are high and the levels of zinc are low in those individuals who are suffering from psoriasis. 

High toxin load

Since the skin is considered the most important organ in the process of detoxing the body, the disorders that have a profound effect on the skin also impact the detoxification process. In some conditions where an overload of an extremely high amount of toxins occurs, they swamp the skin and make it less effective in the process of elimination of the toxic substances from the body. 

Similarly, in conditions that are associated with a reduction in the functioning of the liver as well as the kidneys, which are also essential detoxifying organs, the load of the process of detoxification falls totally on the skin making it struggle. This accumulation of the waste products may further lead to inflammation and also reduces the immune response which may cause flare-ups of psoriasis.

Supplementing with vitamin D

One of the nutrients whose deficiency may cause psoriasis is vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for the functioning of various systems in the body such as the immune, nervous, brain, respiratory and cardiovascular. Exposure to sunlight is one of the best-known ways of improving vitamin D levels. Intake of vitamin D rich foods such as fatty fish, beef liver, and eggs are also beneficial. 

Omega 3 fatty acids 

The major role of omega 3 fatty acids is the reduction of inflammation in the body and also improving overall skin health. Some of the sources of omega 3 fatty acids are fish like sardines, salmon, herring, oysters, and anchovies along with hemp seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, and walnuts. Studies show that supplements of omega 3 fatty acids such as Alvizia flaxseed oil capsules help in the symptomatic relief in psoriasis. 

Adequate zinc and vitamin A

The deficiencies in the levels of zinc and vitamin A may be a causative factor for psoriasis. Zinc is important for the smooth functioning of the immune system and various other metabolic activities. Vitamin A is essential for an adequate immune response along with proper skin, bone, and eye health. Popular zinc sources include meats, ghee, fish, seafood, and egg yolks. Vitamin A is derived from various food sources like meat, vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, broccoli, and red peppers. 

Resveratrol 

Resveratrol is a polyphenol that is derived from the skin of grapes, red wine, and bacteria and it plays an important role in decreasing inflammation in the body thereby causing an improvement in skin health. Resveratrol helps in protecting the skin from overexposure to sunlight, oxidative stress resulting from radiation and other pathogens.
