 Sea buckthorn, a plant containing vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C and some other ingredients, is primarily used for heart health, skin conditions, inflammation and other medical conditions. It is also used to make jellies, purees, sauces and juices of different kinds. Sea buckthorn oil is extracted from berries, leaves and seeds of this plant.Sea buckthorns belong to the genus Hippophae; it is a deciduous shrub in the family Elaeagnaceae. Also referred to as sand thorn, sea berry and sallowthron, it was traditionally used as a natural remedy for skin problems, and also in food.

This plant is outstandingly hardy, and can withstand low temperatures of around -43 to -45 degree Fahrenheit, which explains its abundance in cold regions like Russia and Western Europe.

Sea buckthorn oil is rich in many vitamins, minerals and other useful compounds. It has a lot of antioxidants, which explains why it is good for immunity. The seeds and leaves of sea buckthorn are rich in quercetin, which is basically a flavonoid, and has many benefits in heart health and prevention of cancer. Other nutrients in sea buckthorn include calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, folate, vitamin B1, B2, B6, C, E and potassium. It is also rich in omega-3, omega-6, omega-7 and omega-9 fatty acids, which are the main omega acids that have several health benefits.

  • Diabetes: sea buckthorn may help in reducing blood sugar levels by enhancing the insulin secretion and sensitivity, an animal study suggests. Frequent as well as long term spikes in the blood sugar levels can cause type-2 diabetes, so it is important to reduce the risks associated with it. Sea buckthorn has proved to reduce these risks in several studies.
  • Enhances immunity: sea buckthorn oil protects the human body against many infections, which is attributed to the high flavonoid content present in it. Flavonoids increase the body’s resistance to diseases and hence, enhance the immune functions. A study was carried out in which sea buckthorn actually prevented growth of E. coli bacterium. It also protects against herpes, HIV virus and influenza, another research suggests. Sea buckthorn oil contains a good amount of antioxidants, which is responsible for the body’s natural defense system or immunity, by protecting the body against free radicals and other harmful substances.
  • Gives you healthy and youthful skin: sea buckthorn oil is applied to the skin directly, and boosts the health of the skin to a greater extent. This oil promotes regeneration of skin cells, and heals wounds very quickly, studies suggest. It has proved to protect skin against harmful UV exposure, sun burns etc. It also reduced inflammation on skin. These benefits of sea buckthorn are attributed to the omega-3 and omega-7 fatty acids content present in sea buckthorn. There is also some evidence suggesting that sea buckthorn also prevents drying of skin, healing from burns, frostbite and promotes elasticity.
  • Supports the liver: due to the presence of Vitamin E, healthy fats and carotenoids, sea buckthorn is a healthy option for people with liver problems. It helps safeguard the cells from any sort of damage. In a study that was carried out with patients of cirrhosis, 15 grams of sea buckthorn extract was given to them three times a day, for six long months. And, these people experienced enhanced blood markers of the liver function. In two more studies, it was found out that sea buckthorn oil helps in maintaining the blood cholesterol, triglyceride levels and liver enzyme levels to the healthy levels in people with non-alcoholic liver disease.
  • Acts as a barrier for carcinogenic cells: the flavonoid and antioxidant content present in sea buckthorn oil may help in fighting against development of cancer cells in the human body. Quercetin, a flavonoid that has functions which prevent growth of carcinogenic cells, is present in abundance in the sea buckthorn oil. Carotenoids and vitamin E present in this oil also have some effects that can be used against cancer cell development. However, these cancer preventing effects are much milder when compared to chemotherapeutic drugs. More researches are needed to study these effects properly.
  • Good for mental health: for many years, mental health was neglected by humans in many parts of the world. However, as we all know, it is as essential as physical health is. Sea buckthorn supplements have shown some great effects against depression and anxiety, in a few animal studies. However, to conclude effects on humans for depression and anxiety more research is needed.
  • Additional benefits of sea buckthorn oil: sea buckthorn oil has some additional advantages for improvement of general health. It is known to improve digestion, prevent acidity, and stomach ulcers. It might also treat an upset stomach as well as inflammation in the stomach and Drying of eyes, skin and vagina are also prevented by sea buckthorn oil. It also acts as an alternative treatment for postmenopausal women, for whom estrogen isn’t an option. These benefits are due to the rich nutrient content found in sea buckthorn oil.
