Sea Buckthorn oil has been used since ages as for its medicinal properties to treat coughing, skin rashes, burns and digestive problems. Sea buckthorn plants are native to Asia and Europe and produce orange-yellow berries which can withstand temperatures of -43℃. These berries are to prepare jams, pies, candies, lotions and several alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. What is Sea Buckthorn oil?

It is a red-orange oil derived from the seeds and fruit pulp of Sea buckthorn plants (Species: Hippophae Rhamnoides). The oil is rich in vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, C), minerals, antioxidants, fatty acids and amino acids (Building blocks of proteins). Due to its rich contents, this oil has held a prominent position in Chinese and Tibetan medicine.

Extraction:The seeds contain about 12.5% of the oil whereas the pulp has 8-12% of oil. The oil is extracted from the seeds and pulp using the mechanical cold-pressing technique.

Health Benefits of Sea Buckthorn Oil

Improves Skin Health: The presence of multiple natural antioxidants in Sea Buckthorn oil provides the skin protection against oxidation induced by UV, stress and ageing. The anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory and tissue regenerating effects of sea buckthorn oils have been proven by extensive studies β-Carotene in sea buckthorn oil is a precursor for vitamin A, which is known to be essential for skin well-being.
A study consisting of 30 female subjects with an average age of 61 years took four capsules (2g oil) per day for three months. The results showed a significant increase in skin hydration and overall skin elasticity of the subjects.

Treats cardiovascular problems: Sea buckthorn oil inhibits platelet aggregation and improves cardiovascular functions. In a study, 12 healthy men were given sea buckthorn oil for 4 weeks, the result in a sharp decrease in the adenosine-5 diphosphate induced platelet aggregation.
It has significant cardioprotective activity and exerts many positive healing effects on the cardiovascular system, including inhibiting blood platelet activation (especially platelet aggregation), lowering cholesterol concentration and blood pressure, and providing antioxidant activity.
