SIGNS OF MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY

One of the most commonly known nutrients in the body is magnesium and it is involved in a large number of metabolic reactions that play an important role in the proper functioning of the body. On the other hand, one of the widely occurring deficiencies in the body is that of magnesium. Research shows that a large number of disorders that manifest in the body are directly or indirectly associated with the deficiency of magnesium. Some of the major signs of magical deficiency include:

Poor cognitive behaviour 

Certain symptoms such as occasional clouding of the brain also known as brain fog, lack of concentration, and repetitive memory problems are commonly associated with the deficiency of magnesium. Mitochondria known, as the powerhouse of the cell, are cell organelles that produce energy which is then utilized by the body for various metabolic activities. Studies show that the brain is the area where the highest number of mitochondria are present. The functioning of mitochondria is highly dependent on the presence of adequate amounts of magnesium in the body wherein the reduction of magnesium will inadvertently affect the functioning of the brain.

This ability of magnesium is attributed to the fact that magnesium helps in regulating the calcium amount present in the cells of the neurons. Thus the presence of excess amounts of calcium is associated with neurotoxicity where the overstimulation of the brain cells takes place leading to the formation of migraines and headaches.

Constipation 

By promoting the intake of water into the bowels, appropriate magnesium content in the body helps in softening of the stools which in turn leads to smooth elimination of waste products from the body. When the nature of stools becomes hard, it becomes difficult to eliminate them from the body leading to constipation. Another important role of magnesium is that it helps in regulating the contraction of the muscles present in the intestine and the deficiency of magnesium causes constipation. Thus magnesium consumption may also be beneficial in relieving the discomfort as well as cramps that can occur in conditions like irritable bowel syndrome. 

Fatigue 

Magnesium is an important nutrient that promotes the production of energy at a faster rate as it helps the mitochondria for the formation of energy. In addition to this, magnesium also influences the adrenal glands which also play an important role in the production of energy. The definition of magnesium will highly inhibit a large number of body functions because magnesium is an integral part of a large number of enzymatic reactions in the body. Thus the deficiency of magnesium leads to the occurrence of stress in the body and also causes depletion of the energy reserves. In some individuals who experience fatigue, supplementing with magnesium helps in improving the energy levels in the body. 

Insomnia 

For the production of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA ( gamma-Aminobutyric acid), which causes relaxation, adequate amounts of magnesium are essential in the body. Sleep deprivation occurs when there is reduced magnesium in the body causing insufficient production of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. The proper amount of magnesium in the body also ensures good quality sleep. 

Muscle spasms and cramps

Magnesium is essential for optimal transmission of nerves and it is also vital for proper muscle contraction. Deficiency of magnesium leads to weakening of the muscular contractions and it also causes loss of coordination which leads to the occurrence of spasms that are involuntary in nature as well as extremely painful cramps. These are considered to be one of the first manifested signs of deficiency of magnesium.

The deficiency of magnesium causes spasms that occur particularly in the legs, feet as well as in eyelids. In women, the deficiency of magnesium is also associated with increasing symptoms of premenstrual syndrome such as cramping. Some of the symptoms that indicate the presence of muscle tension include tightness in the muscles of the back, shoulders, neck, and abdomen, tenderness of the muscles, fatigue, headaches due to tension, stress, anxiety, chronic muscle spasms, and soreness as well as pain in the muscles.

Pain and fibromyalgia 

The presence of tension in the body is associated with conditions such as chronic pain along with fibromyalgia which often gets aggravated due to other factors like physical and emotional stress. Anxiety and anger all contribute to emotional stress and a prolonged stressful environment causes chronic tension and ultimately pain. 

The nervous system becomes highly overstimulated when the deficiency of this magnesium occurs in the body which can, in turn, cause more tension in the muscles. The major role of magnesium in such scenarios is to provide a calming effect and soothing as well as relaxing the mind and the body.

Tingling and numbness 

Due to alterations in the activity of a few nerves, some individuals experience numbness along with a tingling feeling especially in the hands and feet which is mainly associated with conditions such as peripheral neuropathy. Studies show that supplementing with magnesium in such conditions often proves to be beneficial in relieving the symptoms of numbness and tingling sensations. 

Mood disturbances 

One of the major actions of magnesium is in the regulation of balancing the neurotransmitters which are the chemicals occurring in the brain which control various neurological functions such as behaviours, motivation, sleep, and concentration. The deficiency of magnesium leads to reduced functioning of GABA in the brain causing disorders like attention deficit disorder (ADD), anxiety, irritability, and imbalances in the mood.
