SYMPTOMS OF OMEGA 3, 6 & 9 DEFICIENCY & CURE

Fatty acids are the building blocks of fat in our body. During the process of digestion, the body breaks down the fat to absorb fatty acids. Fatty acids have many important functions in the body. They serve as the energy source for the muscles and heart and they are the main constituents of the cellular membrane.

Fatty acids are of two types:

  • Essential fatty acids (EFA)

  • Non-essential fatty acids (non-EFA)

Essential fatty acids are essential for the body functioning, but cannot be synthesized in the body, so they should be included in the diet. Non-essential fatty acids are also essential for the body, but they can be synthesized in the body.

Examples of essential fatty acids (EFA): Omega-3 fatty acids and Omega-6 fatty acids. Examples of non-essential fatty acids (non-EFA): Omega-9 fatty acids.

Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids are vital dietary fats for the body, and we should maintain a balance of them as an imbalance causes many diseases.

Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-6 fatty acids Omega-9 fatty acids

Description

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (containing multiple double bonds).

Omega-6 fatty acids are polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (containing multiple double bonds). Omega-9 fatty acids are monounsaturated non-essential fatty acids (containing single double bond).
Types 3 types of important Omega-3 fatty acids are:
  • Eicosapentaenoic acids (EPA)
  • Docosahexaenoic acids (DHA)
  • Alpha-linoleic acid (ALA)
Most important type of omega-6 is linoleic acid which can be converted into arachidonic acid (ARA). Most important type of omega-9 is oleic acid.

Sources

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish, walnuts, flax seeds and green leafy vegetables.
