What is a nail?

A nail is a keratinous plate at the tip of the fingers and toes in most primates.

Why nail health is important?

It is important to have clean, cut nails as a form of basic hygiene and to reduce the risk of any germ infection. Moreover, poor nail health can also indicate many underlying medical conditions. If you are worried about your unhealthy or chipped or stained nails, here are some natural ways to keep your nails healthy:

  • Use salt to scrub your nails, it will not only remove stains but also whiten your nails.

  • Apply toothpaste and scrub your nails with a tooth brush.

  • Use baking soda to get rid of any stains.

  • Cut a lemon in half and use it directly on your nails.

  • Begin by applying cuticle oil/ Vaseline (petroleum jelly) on a daily basis.

  • File and shape your nails regularly.

  • Wear gloves: Both the woolen and the rubber kind! Keeping your hands warm and toasty is good for the senses and your nails, as they won't be exposed to the extreme temperatures.

  • Keep them painted: It may seem counterproductive, but nail polish does actually help to strengthen the nail and aid its growth.

  • Home remedies for nail growth:

    • Olive oil: before going to bed apply warm olive oil to your nails and massage them gently. Do this once daily.

    • Coconut oil: mix coconut oil along with a few drops of any essential oil, warm the solution and then soak your nails in it . Do this once or twice a week.

    • Orange juice: soak your nails in fresh orange juice then rinse it and apply some moisturizer. Follow this remedy once daily.

    • Lemon juice: mix lemon juice and olive oil , warm this solution and soak your hands in it. Follow this remedy daily for stronger and longer nails.

  • For strong nails soak them in a mixture of horsetail.

  • Never use acetone polish removers for our nails. Acetone strips off essential oils from your nails.

  • Nails are weaker when they are wet therefore only cut or file them when they are dry.

  • Short nails are healthy nails.

  • Along with your hands, keep your nails well moisturized.

  • Protect your nails from harmful chemicals- wear gloves.
