WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR EYE HEALTH - Alvizia

Your vision is by far one of the most important characteristics of your survival. Imagine, being unable to witness the melange of beautiful colors or the global existence of wonderful monuments and tourist attraction sites or even not being able to see your own near and dear ones! It’s a terrible proposition, we know, but you need to pay as much attention to your vision and eye health as you do to your body or skincare needs.

In our daily lives, we come across plenty of factors that may unconsciously cause harm to our eye health and it’s very important to take necessary precautions to ensure peak performance of our eyes. For example, causing damage to your retina or eyelid as you use your dirty fingers to rub vigorously at them when dust enters your eyes when in the first place you could’ve just worn sunglasses to prevent this from happening.

Alvizia Healthcare has conducted generalized market research and determined the most effective ways of maintaining eye health and preventing any sort of damage or deterioration caused to your eyesight. Let’s begin:

Constant Eye Checkups

Before we delve into ways to improve your eye health condition, it’s apt to note that prevention is the beginning of all solutions. It’s very important to keep track of your eye health at continuous intervals and make sure you’re aware of the various eye parameters of your analysis. For this, never skip any appointments with your spectacle-dealer’s shop if they have vision checking instrumentation and tools or your ophthalmologist. Typically, a comprehensive eye exam consists of checking the retina and optic nerve using a dilated eye test, general health review and family history of eye disorders, vision testing, and a refraction test to check for myopia or hypermetropia. In case you have a genetic predisposition to eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and/or existing lifestyle diseases like diabetes or hypertension, it’s best to report the same to your attending physician and never miss out on frequent routine checkups.

Avoid using Expired products

So, the common tendency among most of the people in older as well as younger generations is to completely avoid the existence of an expiry date on their purchased goods. There is a reason why a product has manufacturing and expiry dates and it’s to make you aware that no product is eternal, they are bound to have a limit up to which they’re functional and effective and it’s very essential for your eye health maintenance to keep tabs of these dates. Using expired beauty and skincare products, especially those near your eyes, can sometimes cause irreversible damage. Allergic skin reactions, eye infections, vision blurriness are just some of the adverse effects of this occurrence. Liquid makeup products that have long since expired are more prone to gather bad bacteria and this could deteriorate eye health.

Wash your Hands and Fingers

We know, we sound absurd by focusing on your hands and your fingers at the same time, even though they form part of your hands themselves, but give us a read. This tip is going to fare well with people that wear contact lenses because your fingers come in direct contact with them at major points like when removing or putting them in and this makes them a vulnerable junction for dirt entry. Imagine using unsterilized hands for this purpose and then questioning why your eyes are itchy and turning red! A mild soap should be used to scrub your hands and the middle regions of your fingers and then dry them with a lint-free cloth before you touch your glasses or contact lenses or your eyes even. Being cautious and extra careful at all times is going to help maintain your eye health. Germs that enter could lead to infectious diseases like conjunctivitis (red eyes) and that’s a sore pain.

It’s best to Quit Smoking

The harmful smoke from cigarettes when ingested leads to increased evidence of cellular oxidative stress and this damages your lungs and indirectly, your eyes too. Even though a direct connection hasn’t been identified to date, smoking is said to cause multiple deteriorative effects on your eye health. Some of the commonly occurring eye disorders experienced by frequent smokers include cataracts, macular degenerations, optic nerve damage, etc. If you’re finding it difficult to quit, at least start with baby steps, maybe reducing your smoking sessions and then stopping altogether. And a fortunate fact is that if at all your smoking has caused significant damage to your eyes, the condition could be reversed provided you seek medical help in time and quit smoking.

Invest in Safety Eyewear

Irrespective of whether you’re binge-reading a book while lounging in your bedroom or playing golf on the field or watching a film with family, it’s crucial to keep your eyes protected at all times. This is set in stone even if you don’t have a number. Especially important if you’re in near danger of exposing your eyes to harmful dust or sand particles like on a desert safari or while working in a science laboratory where there is the risk of chemicals entering your eyes. Protective glasses now come with a material called polycarbonate that’s much safer than glass spectacles. Hazard-free or safety glasses are also an awesome option for wearing at your workplace if you indulge in high-risk tasks.

Wearing Sunglasses is a must

As many of us annotate sunglasses to being some kind of style statement, they were created with eye protection in mind. Wearing sunglasses not just at the beach but when walking down your local streets or going sightseeing is the norm for eye health maintenance. The sun’s harmful UV rays could pose a massive threat to your sensitive eyes which is why sunglasses come into play as they help to block out approximately 90% of the sunlight directly hitting your eyes. Typically caused eye disorders due to excessive sunlight exposure include macular issues, cataracts, a condition called pterygium which is extraneous tissue growth over the white portion of your eyes, further leading to astigmatism - enhancing blurred vision.

Exercise regularly and efficiently

As surprising as it may seem, but your physical and mental well-being has a lot to do with how well your eyesight will fare in the nearshortlyg, and making sure to manage your weight effectively can help improve your eyesight to some extent. When you exercise efficiently and put in effective hours of workout in your daily schedule, your body’s blood circulation improves drastically, thereby rising oxygen levels to the eye region and releasing harmful toxins. A condition called diabetic retinopathy affects individuals suffering from Type II diabetes when they get overweight or obese. In this situation, excessive blood flow near the eye muscles and walls will injure those vessels and cause damage. People suffering from this disorder start leaking blood and water into the eye thereby disrupting their otherwise clear vision.

Don’t Strain your eyes staring at Devices

Try following the efficient 20-20-20 rule - every 20 minutes take a break from your blue light device like your laptop/computer/mobile phone and look 20 feet away at something that’s located for a total of 20 seconds. Staring at your screen for extended periods could lead to major problems and disorders like neck pain, backaches, migraines, blurry vision, dry eyes, eyestrain, focus issues, shoulder pain, etc. Always make sure your eyes are on a level with your monitor and if not so, move the screen or adjust it accordingly. It’s best to opt for a comfortable seating arrangement like a cozy chair or stool and armrest and backrest are key. Maintain updated contact prescriptions to stare properly at your screens because as the virtual world is taking over, we can’t escape technology!

Balanced Diet Intake

A healthy diet will play a major role in determining how effectively you’ve been able to manage your eye health. Nutrients that could help proactively ward off eye-related problems include vitamins A, C, E, zinc with antioxidants, lutein, omega-3 fatty acids, etc. The following food items are essential for improving your eye health and preventing the occurrence of a variety of disorders: green leafy vegetables (like kale, spinach, bottle gourd), salmon, tuna, carrots, oysters, oranges, eggs, nuts, beans, red peppers, broccoli, strawberries, sweet potatoes, legumes, beef and tons and tons of water to keep your body hydrated!
