Depression can be defined as a group of conditions that are associated with either the elevation or lowering of a person’s mood. It is associated with many feelings like sadness, anger, loss that can interfere with the daily life of the affected individual, by reducing productivity and time. It is a very common condition, affecting many people around the globe. It may also affect relationships as well as some chronic health conditions, by making them worse, which includes: asthma, cancer, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, cardiovascular diseases. Upset moments and feeling down at times are a part of everyone’s daily lives and happens to almost everyone. However, if someone has these feelings regularly, it is then advised to see a psychiatrist or psychologist. Depression is considered a serious medical condition by doctors and can get worse over time if left untreated. 

Symptoms of depression

Depression can affect a person in some other spot other than just affecting mood. Major or severe depression can cause a variety of symptoms to a person, causing effects on the mood as well as the body. These symptoms may come and go, time to time, and act differently on men, women, and children. 

Symptoms in men: mood swings, i.e. anger, irritability, anxiousness, restlessness, aggressiveness; behavioral changes like loss of interest in activities, drugs usage, finding pleasure only in the favorite activities, engagement in risky activities, tiredness, suicidal thoughts; reduced libido and performance; affected cognitive abilities like inability to concentrate, finding it hard to complete a task, delaying in responding to a person; sad, empty and hopeless feelings; fatigue, pain, headache, and other physical problems.

Symptoms in children: mood swings, i.e. irritability, anger, crying; reduced cognitive abilities like difficulty in concentration, the decline in mental abilities and solving questions; change in the sleep patterns; physical symptoms like loss of energy, digestive problems, weight loss, or gain, loss of appetite; behavioral changes.

Symptoms in women: mood swings and irritability, feeling sad, empty, anxious, and hopeless, the decline in cognitive abilities, change in sleep patterns, facing difficulties during sleeping, suicidal thoughts, avoiding social gatherings, loss of interest in activities, decreased levels of energy, fatigue, pain in the body, headaches, loss of appetite, eating too much, elevated levels of cramps, taking too much time to think or analyze things.

Causes of depression

  • Some medical conditions: conditions like chronic illness, insomnia, chronic pain, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) may put you at a higher risk for depression.
  • Family history: if someone has a family history of depression, it puts the person at a higher risk for depression or any other mental health conditions.
  • Structure of the brain: if the frontal lobe of the brain is less active in the brain of a person, it puts him/ her at a greater risk for depression. However, researchers do not know exactly, whether it happens before or after the onset of depression.
  • Childhood trauma: many events affect the way our body tends to react to any kind of stressful situation. Any past trauma can cause depression in individuals.
  • Substance use: a history of drug usage can elevate the risk of depression in individuals. Around 21 percent of the people who are into drugs or alcohol suffer from depression. 
  • Other factors: other than the causes mentioned above, there are other risk factors like mental illness or personal history, stressful events, certain medications, low self-esteem, or being self-critical.

Types of depression

  • Persistent depressive disorder: known as dysthymia earlier, is a mild and chronic form of depression. To diagnose this type of depression, the symptoms must last for at least 2 years. It can affect life more than major depression as it lasts for a longer period. Symptoms include feelings of hopelessness, lack of productivity, lower self-esteem, losing interest in daily activities. 
  • Major depressive disorder: this is a more severe form of depression and can be characterized by persistent feelings of hopelessness, sadness, worthlessness that do not go away on their own. There are different sub-types of this type of depression, namely: anxious distress, mixed features, atypical features, melancholic features, psychotic features, catatonia, and peripartum onset during pregnancy. 

Prevention and treatment of depression

  • Medications: the psychiatrist may prescribe certain antidepressants, anti-anxiety, or anti-psychotic drugs upon consultation. These medications are usually effective and have passed many tests in the research area.
  • Therapies: psychotherapy refers to the therapy that involves speaking with a healthcare professional (a therapist), and learning about the ways that can help in eliminating depression. This is one of the most popular ways of treating depression.
  • Exercises: researchers suggest that people who work out or engage themselves in any sort of physical activity, are at a lower risk for depression. Exercising enhances the production of endorphins (hormones that affect the mood of a person) in the body that can elevate the mood and eliminate feelings of sadness and hopelessness.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs: drinking alcohol and using drugs are harmful to a person, but little is known about the increased risk of depression that is associated with it. It can make mental conditions like depression and anxiety worse in the long run.
  • Focus on yourself: elimination of depression can also be done by taking care of yourself, which includes, consuming healthy food and a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep daily, indulging in activities that you enjoy, and trying to socialize with friends. These lifestyle changes usually benefit the affected person, even if medications aren’t working.
