What is Ginseng?

Ginseng is a short plant with fleshy roots. There are three varieties namely fresh, white or red and this classification is based on how long the plant has grown.

Ginseng is one of these plants that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Talking about its variety, the fresh ginseng is harvested before 4 years, the white ginseng is harvested between 4-6 years and red ginseng is harvested after 6 years.

There are various ginseng including American ginseng called Panax quinquefolius and Asian ginseng called Panax ginseng. These are the most popular ginseng. Both of them vary in their concentration of active compounds. Moreover, they have different effects on the body. While the American ginseng has a relaxing effect, the Asian ginseng has an invigorating effect.

There are two significant compounds of ginseng namely ginsenosides and gintonin. Ginsenosides and gintonin complement one other and provide various health benefits.

Now after having an overview of ginseng, let us explore the health benefits offered by the fascinating plant.

Ginseng as a  potent antioxidant

Ginseng has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Test tube studies show that ginseng extract can inhibit inflammation. Also, it increases the antioxidant capacity of the cells.

Another study has shown that Korean red ginseng extract can help people with eczema by reducing inflammation and improving antioxidant activity.

A study involving 18 young athletes shows that Korean red ginseng extract, when taken three times per day for seven days, helped them to lower the markers of inflammation after performing an exercise test. The levels were compared with those of the placebo group. Those in the placebo group got a different medicinal herb and hence these results should be taken with a grain of salt.

Another study involving 71 postmenopausal women showed that red ginseng can help to reduce oxidative stress. It does so by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities.

So through the above-mentioned studies, we can summarize it by saying that ginseng reduces inflammatory markers and helps protect against oxidative stress.

Ginseng improved brain function

It is believed that ginseng improves memory, behaviour and mood. It is said that ginsenosides and compound K present in ginseng protect the brain from the free radical damage.

A study involving 30 healthy men showed that when ginseng was consumed daily for four weeks, it improved the mental health, social functioning and mood of the volunteers.

Nevertheless, it was noted that after 8 weeks, the benefits stopped. This suggests that the effects of ginseng might decrease after its extended usage.

Other studies show that supplementing with ginseng can help improve math skills and calmness. Also, positive effects in brain function have been seen in people with Alzheimer's disease.

Now we can say that Ginseng benefits mental functions and mood in both healthy as well as people with Alzheimer's.

Ginseng improves erectile dysfunction

Research says that ginseng can be used alternatively to treat erectile dysfunction abbreviated as ED in men. This might be because of the compounds present in the ginseng that protect against the oxidative stress.

Nitric oxide improves muscle relaxation in the penis. It is said that ginseng promotes the production of this nitric oxide and hence increases blood circulation.

A study showed that Korean red ginseng can improve the ED symptoms by 60% as compared to the medication used to treat ED (30%).

Ginseng boost immune system

Various studies have been done to expire the benefits of ginseng on the immune system. It has been shown that ginseng improves immune function and increases the recurrence of the symptoms in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Studies suggest that people who take ginseng have a 35% higher chance of living disease-free for five years after curative surgery. Also, it is said that ginseng enhances the effect of vaccinations including that of influenza.

Boost immunity, men health, sexual stamina

Ginseng increase energy levels

Ginseng fights against fatigue and hence promotes energy. The polysaccharides and polypeptides present in ginseng lower oxidative stress and increase energy production in cells. This way it helps to fight fatigue Studies say that Panax ginseng can help people with chronic fatigue. The intake of Panax ginseng resulted in less physical and mental fatigue among them.

Ginseng lower blood pressure

Ginseng is believed to benefit people with diabetes as well as without diabetes. American and Asian ginseng improves pancreatic cell function thereby boosting insulin production. This increases the uptake of blood sugar in the tissues.

Studies suggest that ginseng provides antioxidant protection thereby reducing free radicals inside the cells. Ginseng along with usual anti-diabetic medication can decrease fasting insulin by 38%, increase insulin sensitivity by 33% and decrease blood sugar levels by 11%.
