What is Ginseng?
Ginseng is a short plant with fleshy roots. There are three varieties namely fresh, white or red and this classification is based on how long the plant has grown.
Ginseng is one of these plants that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. Talking about its variety, the fresh ginseng is harvested before 4 years, the white ginseng is harvested between 4-6 years and red ginseng is harvested after 6 years.

A study involving 18 young athletes shows that Korean red ginseng extract, when taken three times per day for seven days, helped them to lower the markers of inflammation after performing an exercise test. The levels were compared with those of the placebo group. Those in the placebo group got a different medicinal herb and hence these results should be taken with a grain of salt.
Another study involving 71 postmenopausal women showed that red ginseng can help to reduce oxidative stress. It does so by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities.

Ginseng improved brain function
It is believed that ginseng improves memory, behaviour and mood. It is said that ginsenosides and compound K present in ginseng protect the brain from the free radical damage.
A study involving 30 healthy men showed that when ginseng was consumed daily for four weeks, it improved the mental health, social functioning and mood of the volunteers.
Nevertheless, it was noted that after 8 weeks, the benefits stopped. This suggests that the effects of ginseng might decrease after its extended usage.
Other studies show that supplementing with ginseng can help improve math skills and calmness. Also, positive effects in brain function have been seen in people with Alzheimer's disease.

Studies suggest that ginseng provides antioxidant protection thereby reducing free radicals inside the cells. Ginseng along with usual anti-diabetic medication can decrease fasting insulin by 38%, increase insulin sensitivity by 33% and decrease blood sugar levels by 11%.
